Safety on campus: solar eclipse edition
Safety on campus is always very important, but it is especially critical when events are occurring both on and around campus. On Monday, Apr. 8, 2024, Geneseo will witness a total solar eclipse. The director of tourism in Livingston County, Kelly Burns, estimated that 350,000-500,000 people will be traveling to Livingston County to witness the event. As a result of this momentous occasion, many organizations are hosting events for students and the public. Here are some things to keep in mind and avoid on campus to ensure your safety.
WGSU program schedule deepens
Since 1963, 89.3 WGSU-FM has graced the Geneseo area. WGSU acts as SUNY Geneseo’s college radio station which broadcasts from the bowels of Blake Hall, and is run mostly by students who have an interest in broadcasting or the behind-the-scenes work done within a radio station. The opportunity of a college radio station to have students running it is undeniable to both listeners and those who help make the station run.
Philosophy Outreach program returns to SUNY Geneseo
The Philosophy Outreach program was an initiative put out by the philosophy department here at SUNY Geneseo to try and connect with local grade schools to increase interest and awareness among the students of philosophy. The program had its first start-up in 2019, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ability for the program to make contact with other schools lapsed. This semester, previous faculty advisor and department chair, Dr. David Levy, with the help of senior philosophy major Aspen Griffing, sought to bring the program back to Geneseo.
Invasion of Privacy: Marci Frutkoff and Michele the Library Dog
I had the honor this week of speaking with SUNY Geneseo’s therapy dog, Michele, and her handler, Marci Frutkoff. Michele is a nine-year-old Labrador retriever who has been working at Geneseo as a therapy dog every Thursday for the past four semesters.

Plastic Free Zone bottle & can collection increases sustainability on campus
SUNY Geneseo embraces sustainability as a core value on campus while encouraging students to do the same. Students have taken on this core value so much so that sustainability was launched as a new major within the Department of Geography and Sustainability in the fall of 2021. At the end of the fall 2021 semester, 32 students had already declared and become sustainability majors.

Joshua Taylor is a senior sociology major and Rochester native who has begun work in photography in recent years. He will be graduating from Geneseo in May, but in the meantime, has left his mark on campus with a photography exhibition.
Geneseo Pride teaches students about sexual health through jeopardy
This past Thursday, Feb. 29, Geneseo Pride Alliance and Voices for Planned Parenthood at Geneseo (VOX) came together to host an inclusive sex education Jeopardy event in the Macvittie College Union Hunt Room. Pride Alliance Co-President, and senior anthropology student, Grace Pearse explained the incentive behind the event, stating “The presentation was informative and dealt with the history of Sex Ed. in America and topics like sexuality and gender, and the trivia game afterward was fun and engaging… I think the event went really well!”
Invasion of Privacy: Communication Department Chair Andrew Herman
Since the fall semester of 2002, SUNY Geneseo has been graced by the presence of Dr. Andrew Herman. Herman serves as the Chair of Communication while teaching COMN 379, a course dedicated to preparing the major’s students for life after college and future careers. Through all his work on campus, though, he still finds time for his family and leisurely activities on days off.
2024 Diversity Summit serves to inform Geneseo community
On Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, Geneseo hosted the sixth annual Diversity Summit. The summit consists of a full day of short sessions hosted by students and faculty members. The theme of this year’s summit was Taking Action: Advancing Equity at Geneseo.

GLKxFSU Olivia Rodrigo Knight
On Friday, Feb. 23, Geneseo Late Knight (GLK) and the Filipinx Student Union (FSU) co-hosted an event together called “Olivia Rodrigo Knight.” The event took place in the College Union Programming Space (CUPS), and ran for three hours beginning at 8 p.m. Rodrigo’s music was played throughout the night while students decorated notebooks. The notebooks, along with the decorations, were supplied by GLK and FSU—making the event completely free for Geneseo students. Students could draw whatever they chose on their notebooks and place stickers wherever their hearts desired, creating a wide variety of results from participants.
10th annual Insomnia Film Fest registration opens
The 10th annual Geneseo Insomnia Film Festival’s (GIFF) registration period has opened and event coordinators are looking for any and all SUNY Geneseo students to sign up for the 24-hour-long contest. As a member of last year’s winning team, “Wyo”, I can tell you, you won’t want to miss out!
Ongoing campus construction interferes with student life
SUNY Geneseo is currently working on three multimillion-dollar campus improvement projects which are funded by the State University Construction Fund. According to the official Geneseo website, the three projects include the College Infrastructure Project, the Milne Library Renovation, and the Sturges Hall Renovation.
Douglass Day 2024 at SUNY Geneseo
This year Geneseo hosted their second annual Douglass Day event. It took place in the ballroom within the Robert MacVittie Union. The all-day affair, hosted by the Center for Digital Learning, began at 9 a.m. and had activities until 3 p.m. Professor Paul Schacht played an active role in the planning and operation of this event and was eager to discuss the details surrounding the day.

Invasion of Privacy: Geneseo swim and dive head coach Paul Dotterweich
SUNY Geneseo’s athletic teams have taken home the State University of New York Athletic Conference’s (SUNYAC) Commissioner’s Cup for seven consecutive years. The honor, which measures the top overall athletic program in the SUNYAC conference, determines the overall winner for each given school year. To continue to have the consistent success Geneseo has, many of the teams on campus have needed to perform well for years on end. This is not any more applicable than with the men’s and women’s swim and dive teams led by head coach Paul Dotterweich.
Brand new club on campus: The Vegan Club
SUNY Geneseo is proud to advertise numerous available on-campus clubs and encourages the creation of new clubs for its student body. One Geneseo student recently took advantage of this to create a brand new club on campus. Junior business administration major Julia Kimmel has created and started the Vegan Club at Geneseo which held its first official meeting on Monday, Feb. 19, 2024.
Students learn dangers of substance abuse at smoke-free campus campaign Valentine’s party
On Monday, Feb. 12, Geneseo’s sector of the Breathe Easy Campaign threw a smoke-free campus Valentine's party in the Union ballroom. The event allowed students to make “Valentine's Day cards, enjoy some snacks, and gain some skills to stop using tobacco products.” They supplied all materials for card making along with candies and chocolate to add to the cards (or eat yourself). While making your loved ones personalized Valentine's Day cards, you could eat free pizza and enjoy music with friends and Breathe Easy interns.
