The New York Jets escaped Metlife Stadium with a 22-16 win in overtime against the Buffalo Bills on Monday, Sept. 11. Fans were in a frenzy when Jets’ rookie wide receiver Xavier Gipson returned a punt 65 yards for the walk-off score; it was a spectacular moment, and an even better story as Gipson went undrafted in this year’s National Football League Draft. Sadly, the return and game at large were overshadowed by quarterback Aaron Rodgers tearing his Achilles earlier in the night.

Buffalo bounces back, tramples Las Vegas in week two

Week one of the 2023 National Football League (NFL) season made it clear that the American Football Conference heavyweights are just as vulnerable as any other team. The Kansas City Chiefs lost opening night to the Detroit Lions, the Cincinnati Bengals were beaten down by the Cleveland Browns, and, of course, the Buffalo Bills looked completely incompetent against the Zach Wilson-led New York Jets.

As we await the beginning of the 2023 International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup, it is becoming difficult to ignore the pressing issues facing next year’s event. While there has been no official confirmation from the ICC, numerous publications reported that the global governing body of cricket is contemplating relocating the World Cup from the U.S. to England or another nation.

Ranking NHL teams’ rookie prospects from the Buffalo Sabres Prospect Challenge - Pt. 1

This past weekend from Sept. 15 through the 18, six National Hockey League (NHL) teams traveled to Buffalo for the annual Buffalo Sabres Prospect Challenge at the LECOM Harborcenter. The teams in attendance included the Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, and Ottawa Senators. In the round-robin style tournament, rookie prospects were able to skate alongside their future teammates and show off their skills to coaches and fans.

Field hockey suffers their second loss of the season against Salisbury

The Geneseo women’s field hockey team suffered their second loss of the season this past weekend on Saturday, Sept. 16, when they went up against Salisbury College. Geneseo put up a tough game when they held their own defensively as they only allowed three shots to get in the goal. Salisbury is ranked fourth nationally, so the fight the Knights put up was extremely impressive.

Volleyball picks up first wins of the season, splits weekend series

SUNY Geneseo’s volleyball team started their season strong this past weekend during tournament play at Franklin & Marshall College. On Friday, Sept. 8, they beat St. John Fisher in five sets for their first win of the season, before falling short after a dogfight in another five-set match against Heidelberg. Following that, on Saturday, Sept. 9, the Knights fell short to John Carroll in a three-set match but wrapped up their weekend on a high note with a win against Nazareth in five sets.

Women’s rugby begins season against Cortland

On Saturday, Sept. 9, Geneseo’s women’s rugby team had their first match of the fall season against the Cortland Peace Frogs. Although the team suffered a 40-17 loss, there was nothing but excitement on the pitch. With a large and supportive crowd, Geneseo was pumped up for a good game. The Warthogs were anticipating a fun game with a large class of new players as they put their skills to the test and scored three tries as a team, and one player’s first.

The men’s lacrosse team looked to continue their dominance in their final SUNYAC and regular season matchup against the Oneonta Red Dragons on Saturday, Apr. 29. The game was preceded by the team’s senior day ceremony with players William McCumiskey, Christian Marcello, Jr., Reese Gerlach, Liam Kassl, Brady Sullivan, Sean Grace, Kevin Leon, Mark Pav, Jason DeCoteau, Kevin Ehli, Spencer Frank, and Kenny Hannaford being honored with 400 spectators present to cheer them on.

Geneseo cruises past Brockport in doubleheader

The Geneseo softball team continued their season with an impressive doubleheader victory against Brockport on Thursday, Apr. 27. These two wins came after a four-game skid where Geneseo dropped two straight doubleheaders against Cortland and the University of Rochester. The Brockport games ended with final scores of 6-0 and 9-1 while wrapping up in the sixth inning of the second game due to the run rule.

Softball remains prominent in SUNYAC standings; sweeps Oswego over the weekend

The team took both games against the Lakers on Friday, Apr. 21 with each game ending early as a result of the run rule. After the contests, Geneseo sat at 15-10-1 overall on the season and 6-4 in SUNYAC matchups with a winning streak of five straight games.
