Men’s Lacrosse dominated the field this past Saturday with a 12-6 win over Oneonta
The men’s lacrosse team looked to continue their dominance in their final SUNYAC and regular season matchup against the Oneonta Red Dragons on Saturday, Apr. 29. The game was preceded by the team’s senior day ceremony with players William McCumiskey, Christian Marcello, Jr., Reese Gerlach, Liam Kassl, Brady Sullivan, Sean Grace, Kevin Leon, Mark Pav, Jason DeCoteau, Kevin Ehli, Spencer Frank, and Kenny Hannaford being honored with 400 spectators present to cheer them on.
The Knights started incredibly strong with a goal from midfielder McCumiskey, assisted by junior attacker Robert Boneillo, within the first few minutes of the game. A second goal was scored, this time from sophomore attacker Jimmy Atkinson following a great pass by senior attacker Brady Sullivan. Geneseo didn't stop there, though, as they put up three more goals before the end of the first quarter—all from Atkinson who didn't seem to have any trouble finding the back of the net.
Oneonta answered back in the second quarter with one goal, but it was quickly forgotten as Geneseo hit the net with a goal from attacker Marcello Jr. with nine minutes left in the frame. By the end of the second quarter, the Knights were up by five goals and the offense kept rolling into the final half.
Geneseo tallied only one goal in the third quarter as Boneillo scored unassisted. Geneseo’s defense got a rare scare in the second half as Oneonta scored four goals, but they were able to overcome and reclaim the lead in the last quarter.
The Knights asserted their dominance in the fourth and final quarter with seven more goals. At the beginning of the quarter, Atkinson yet again made his way to the net with an assist from Marcello, Jr., leaving Geneseo up by two goals. Marcello, Jr. scored again at the 11-minute mark with an assist from junior BB Syrop before a goal was scored by freshman midfielder Jack Helrigel. Boneillo and Marcello, Jr. both scored one more time with Marcello, Jr. making his with two minutes left in the game.
Atkinson led the offensive pack with six points as Marcello, Jr. added four of his own to help attack Oneonta’s defense. Geneseo won 13 faceoffs and took 32 ground balls while the defense stood their ground against the Red Dragon’s tough attackers who took 35 shots on Geneseo’s goal.
Also worth noting in the game, goalkeeper Pav recorded his 500th career save for Geneseo along with his 11th win of the season which puts him fifth all-time for highest saves recorded in program history. The Knights finished their regular season with a 13-4 overall record, and a stunning 7-0 SUNYAC record and will look to make a deep run in the SUNYAC playoff tournament in the coming week.
