Field hockey suffers their second loss of the season against Salisbury

The Geneseo women’s field hockey team suffered their second loss of the season this past weekend on Saturday, Sept. 16, when they went up against Salisbury College. Geneseo put up a tough game when they held their own defensively as they only allowed three shots to get in the goal. Salisbury is ranked fourth nationally, so the fight the Knights put up was extremely impressive.

Within the first ten minutes, Salisbury made their way past the offensive line and through the defense, hitting the back of the net and putting themselves on the scoreboard. Three minutes later, Salisbury struck again and added another number to the board with a second successful shot on goal.

Geneseo attempted to get the ball through the Sea Gulls’ defense, but were unsuccessful as they could not get the ball into the net. Late in the second quarter, the Sea Gulls added another point to the score, forcing their way through the defense and taking a commanding 3-1 lead.

That second quarter goal would be Salisbury’s last for the day, but the Knights were itching for a good shot. Geneseo stepped up their defensive game and reduced Salisbury’s chances at a clean shot the rest of the way.

Geneseo strengthened their defense for the next two quarters and successfully fended off the Sea Gulls as no more shots on goal made their way to the net. The team was awarded five penalty corners throughout the game, whereas Salisbury was awarded with ten. All were defended well, as neither team allowed a score.

In the final quarter, the Knights finally hit the back of the net as sophomore midfielder Sam Lewis made her way down the field, patiently awaiting an assist from freshman midfielder Ava Schillaci. It was sadly too late for the Knights to execute a comeback, but their momentum picked up and they finished the game strong. Lewis’s goal marks her third of the season and 12th of her career.

Multiple Geneseo players such as senior forward Katrina Clare took shots on goal, but unfortunately came out unsuccessful. Schillaci had one attempted shot on goal, but was unable to hit the back of the net.

The loss puts Geneseo at 3-2 to start the season before SUNYAC competition begins on Sunday, Sept. 24. Despite their first home loss, the Knights will look to bounce back and continue a great season.
