Women’s lacrosse Makes their way further into the SUNYAC circuit

The Knights had a successful stint this past week as they beat both Clarkson University and SUNY Plattsburgh to move through some tough SUNYAC competition and improve their season record to 5-2.

This past Friday, the Knights started their long weekend with a successful win as they beat Clarkson with a final score of 12-9. To start the game off quickly and powerfully, junior attacker Megan Cook scored the first goal for Geneseo within the first 13 minutes. It wasn’t the last goal of the quarter, though, as senior midfielder Maira Brennan put the ball in the net before Cook scored once again. The first quarter ended with a buzzer-beater from sophomore attacker Molly Brown.

Making their way into the second quarter, Brown scored twice more with an assist from freshman midfielder Alaina Reina. Reina didn’t just assist in the quarter, as she scored the last goal before halftime with one-minute left thanks to an assist from junior defender Tricia Curran. The Knights went to halftime up 7-5 and looked to continue to dominate well into the second half.

It was not until nine minutes into the third quarter that the Knights scored again as Reina went unassisted. A new scorer found the back of the net with six minutes left as well, with junior attacker Reegan Vorgang finding an assist from Brown to complete the score for Geneseo.

In the final quarter, Renia scored once again with an assist from Brown to extend their lead over Clarkson to 10-8. The last two goals were scored by Brown and Reina as the Knights closed out the 12-9 victory.

The next day was not much different as sophomore attacker Sophie Lyko scored the first goal of the game against Plattsburgh right off the bat. It wasn’t long after when junior midfielder Caitlyn Korzeniewski went unassisted for the second goal of the day. Reina dominated the field yet again with another goal and another assist from Brown to extend the lead over Plattsburgh. As the first quarter came to an end the Knights were up by one goal, ready to pull ahead further in the next three quarters.

In the second quarter, Plattsburgh scored first tying the two teams up, but it did not last long as Brown pulled through and scored unassisted two minutes later. Brennan followed, with the help from Brown, to score while putting Geneseo two goals in front of their opponents. Geneseo caught fire and scored four more goals before halftime courtesy of Lyko, sophomore defender Sophia Lamendola, junior midfielder Emily Salanger, and Vorgang.

After halftime, Brown scored twice and Lamendola scored once to put the team up 11-3 leading into the home stretch of the game. Brown scored another two in the final quarter along with Brennan tacking on another to finish out the game with a score of 14-3.

The team is over halfway through the regular season and is slated to take on several SUNYAC competitors in their remaining contests. The team will play next against Oneonta at home on Friday, Apr. 7 at 4:00 p.m. at College Stadium.
