Invasion of Privacy: Arts and Entertainment Editor Madelyn Dewey expands literary talent of The Lamron and general Geneseo community

The many talents of The Lamron's editorial staff are one of the many aspects that makes Geneseo's student newspaper so unique. English and political science double major senior Madelyn Dewey is one such talent.

Though Dewey has been the Arts and Entertainment editor for The Lamron for the past two years, she has dedicated her time and talents to the newspaper throughout her Geneseo career. Starting off as a writer her freshman year, Dewey quickly rose through the ranks to become an Arts and Entertainment assistant at the beginning of her sophomore year, which led to a smooth transition into editor for her second half of sophomore year, as well as her junior and senior year.

Dewey frequently contributes to the newspaper not only through her editing, but also through her fun and light-hearted articles that brighten up The Lamron's repertoire each week. One of her most recent articles was entitled, "Ranking the dogs in my Geneseo neighborhood from least to most athletic."

"I really liked that article because it reminds me of all the cute dogs that I see all the time," Dewey said via a Zoom interview. "I think most of my articles are flowing into that kind of headspace this semester, but I like it. It's fun."

Dewey additionally uses her creativity to contribute to the newspaper artistically.

"Last year when I still had access to InDesign ... I was able to do little graphic design doodles, and I put little baby Yoda's in The Lamron, which was nice," Dewey said. "That's one of my crowning achievements."

Dewey's creative talents stretch far beyond Star-Wars-themed doodles. In addition to painting and drawing, Dewey's wheelhouse features playing guitar, singing and being a member of the creative writing program at Geneseo. Though Dewey enjoys writing fiction most, she admits that it can be a struggle from time to time.

"I think it's hardest to do that because it's creating something in your own head that doesn't exist," Dewey said.

Dewey is currently in the midst of crafting a horror novella that she is writing for her capstone project. She is using this project not only to expand and practice her own literary talents, but also to challenge the gendered boundaries of the horror genre.

"I am using a male protagonist to make the audience think that he's a good guy, but then gets haunted and it turns out he's a really bad guy and he gets what he deserves," Dewey said."[Writing it] is kind of an interesting experience, even if it doesn't come out exactly how I want it to."

When she is not breaking down sexist barriers and doodling baby Yoda's, Dewey might be found watching "The Haunting of Bly Manor," reading Victorian novels or drinking a vanilla chai latte at Crickets. She hopes to make time to participate in these many activities, in addition to looking for work in either editing or public relations after she graduates this spring.
