How to Make Thanksgiving 2020 Feel “Normal”

This year has not gone according to plan. With COVID-19 hitting, many events have been postponed or canceled, stores have closed either permanently or temporarily and people have been advised to stay indoors to stop the spread of the virus.

Now, the holidays are coming up, and health experts ask that people not visit their friends and families given that this holiday season is unlike any other. While there are many differences between this Thanksgiving season and previous ones, it can be enjoyable to find or do specific things to make the holiday feel more “normal.”

  1. Cook the same food as your family members (or as similar as possible) and eat dinner together while on a video chat. It may not feel the same as it usually does, but it is still a way to feel a sense of togetherness.

  2. Keep up with the traditions, such as watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The parade does look different this year, but it will still be happening. Or, if you do not ordinarily watch the parade, watch another show that still gives you the same holiday energy.

  3. See your family members, safely, of course. Go outside, wear a mask and stay socially distant. If you do not live far away from your family members, you can still spend time together outside.

  4. Practice gratitude. Even if you think there is not much to be thankful for this year, still consider that this is a holiday where people practice appreciation and list off what it is that they are thankful for. While it may be more difficult to do this year, it is a tradition that can be maintained.

This season make sure to practice safety measures and behaviors and also do enjoyable activities to keep the Thanksgiving energy alive.
