As the Major League Baseball (MLB) post-season comes down to the final two teams, it seems an opportune time to reminisce on the last four games of the 2004 American League Championship Series (ALCS) between historic rivals, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. The series remains one of the greatest comebacks in the history of professional sports. The start of these four legendary days was brought on by the Boston Red Sox trailing the Yankees 0-3 in a best-of-seven playoff series to clinch the ALCS and move on to the World Series.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, Geneseo’s men's and women's swim and dive teams both took home wins against Alfred State College. The men’s team left Erie Community College, where the meet took place, with a 210-90 win while the women’s team left with a 232-60 victory. 

The 2023-24 National Basketball Association (NBA) season started this past week with opening night occurring on Tuesday, Oct. 24. This season already has plenty of storylines to follow after a busy offseason around the league. 

After week six of the National Football League (NFL) season, the Bills were sitting at 4-2. Following their win against the New York Giants, they set their sights on the New England Patriots. 

On Saturday, Oct. 14, Geneseo’s women's rugby team played an exciting and rainy game against Le Moyne College. The Warthogs came out on top with a score of 34-0 and mercy ruled the Banshees within the first half of the match. The contest was their senior game which honored fly-half Hannah Reid, hooker Jillian Orr, second-row Rae Griffin, wing Nicole Petfield, and props Claire Bressette and Peyton Vanboden. 

In August 2018, SUNY Geneseo announced that their women’s basketball team would have a new head coach. There was nobody better for the job than a former Knights All-American athlete with plenty of coaching experience at Geneseo; with that in mind, Alyssa Polosky assumed the role that summer. Polosky had served as the assistant coach for seven seasons under the previous head coach, providing her with ample experience and a drive to win.

This past week on Thursday, Oct. 12, the Buffalo Sabres took on the New York Rangers in their home opener at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo. While it wasn’t the outcome Sabres fans had hoped for, there were still a lot of positives amidst the disappointments.

The Buffalo Bills came into week three of the National Football League (NFL) season feeling energized after their dominant performance against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, Sept. 17, in which they won by four touchdowns. The bounce-back game was a necessity after the Bills’ week-one loss against the lowly Zach Wilson-led Jets. 

Last weekend from Sept. 15 through the 18, six National Hockey League (NHL) teams traveled to Buffalo for the annual Buffalo Sabres Prospect Challenge at the LECOM Harborcenter. The teams in attendance included the Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, and Ottawa Senators. In the round-robin style tournament, rookie prospects were able to skate alongside their future teammates and show off their skills to coaches and fans.

On Saturday, Sept. 23, Geneseo’s men’s soccer team attempted to defend the castle against the undefeated Red Dragons of Oneonta, while the women’s soccer team traveled downstate to take on their SUNYAC foe.  

As the Major League Baseball (MLB) season draws to a close on Sunday, Oct. 1, the revealing of All-MLB award winners will follow closely behind. Whether it be the best pitchers, rookies, overall players in each league, or contributions off the field from team managers, there seem to be some clear-cut winners for each award in 2023. What follows are my predictions for the major awards, which will be announced in November.
