Women’s Lacrosse dominates in their first game of the season
The Geneseo women’s lacrosse team held their own this past week with a successful trip to Nazareth College on Wednesday, Mar 1. This marked their first game of the year, and there would be no better way to kick off their season—the Knights played hard the entire game and achieved an 18-10 win over the Golden Flyers.
To start the game off, Nazareth scored the first goal, putting them ahead. But Geneseo was not far behind as freshman midfielder Alaina Reina hit the back of the net off an assist from junior attacker Megan Cook. This was Reina’s first collegiate score with Geneseo and led the way as the goals kept coming for the Knights. Junior midfielder Caitlin Korzeniewski scored unassisted to yet again tie up the game after a Nazareth goal put them ahead. Another unassisted goal was made by sophomore attacker Molly Brown to put an end to the tie until Nazareth snuck up behind Geneseo and scored twice more to retake the lead before the end of the first quarter.
The lead for Nazareth was short-lived as Korzeniewski scored again with the help of sophomore attacker Molly Brown to once again tie the game. Junior attacker Reegan Vorgang scored at the nine-minute mark unassisted and kept the momentum going as the team made their way through the second quarter. Senior midfielder Maira Brennan scored an unassisted goal, her first as a Knight, followed closely by two back-to-back shots by Molly Brown. This threw Geneseo in the lead through the end of this quarter with two more successful shots on goal. Both junior midfielder Emily Salanger and Reina scored at the end of the second quarter which put the Knights at a 10-5 advantage going into halftime.
Geneseo held their ground in the third quarter as sophomore attacker Maddie Brown scored back-to-back unassisted goals within a minute of each other pushing the Knights further into the lead. With two minutes left in the third quarter, Vorgang scored once again with an assist from Cook to end the quarter with a 13-8 lead.
In the final quarter, Salanger scored at the 12-minute mark with an assist from Maddie Brown for Geneseo’s 14th goal of the day. There were more goals to be scored though, as Molly Brown scored unassisted twice in a row, the second coming in the last two minutes. The horn sounded after the 60-minute battle, as the Knights emerged victorious with an 18-10 win in their season-opener.
Geneseo’s offense pushed the Knights to victory with 18 successful shots on goal on a total of 37 attempted shots. The defense held their own this game, as senior midfielder Meg Steeley picked up four ground balls and kept the Golden Eagles away from the net. Junior goalkeeper Emily Dejohn had three saves in this game to go along with graduate student Maggie Rosaschi’s eight. Geneseo played a phenomenal game on both sides of the field, something they hope to continue following their 15-4 season last year.
