Knights vs. Devils

Tuesday night's hockey game versus the Fredonia Blue Devils was a tough one to watch (as well as odd, seeing as it was a hockey game on a Tuesday). On the bright side, our pep band was back in action! And regardless of what day of the week it is or the outcome of the game, we know that our Geneseo Ice Knights always try their hardest.

In the first period, Fredonia started off strong. Just as the puck hit the ice, the boys got physical—no one was going home without a fight. Freshman forward Stefan Miklakos did not let the Blue Devils get in his way. He skated hard through their defense, dangled the puck in the opposing zone, and tried to rip a shot, which ended up getting deflected.

This period was full of back-and-forth play, both teams ripping shots on goal left and right. The game started to get chippy as penalties were called. The Ice Knights were down to two players, giving Fredonia an advantage with a 5 on 3. Eventually the Blue Devils fired a shot with only seven minutes left in the first period, scoring their first goal of the game—a powerplay goal. Junior defenseman Nicolas Elia worked hard and pushed through to keep the puck out of his zone. The first period ended with the score of 1-0, the Blue Devils having taken the lead.

Within the first two minutes of the second period, first-year forward Peter Morgan sent a pass to fellow first-year forward Domenic Garozzo, shooting the puck past the goalkeeper to the glove side to tie the score, 1-1. The Ice Knights clapped back to the Blue Devils, showing that they wouldn’t go down without a fight.

Senior forward Levi Wunder powered down the ice, passing the puck to his teammates. The boys worked hard to get that puck in the net again.

Senior forward Ryan Burnett came dashing straight out of the penalty box, caught the puck on a breakaway and took a shot on net, which was blocked. With 12 minutes left in the period, senior forward Brendan Miller went in for a shot and scored his seventh goal of the season, ending the second period with the Knights in the lead 2-1.

As the final period began, both teams were getting feisty. Geneseo was carrying in the number of shots on net, doubling Fredonia’s shot count. Within the first five minutes of the period, the Blue Devils fired a shot and hit the back of the net, making the score a 2-2 tie.

With only 11 minutes left on the clock, Fredonia scored their third goal of the game. Here, the boys started to get more physical, giving the game their all. Junior goalkeeper Matt Petizian worked hard and made several saves. The buzzer went off to end the third period, and the final score on the board was 3-2 Fredonia.

The Ice Knights are a tough team to beat, and they tried their hardest at this game. No matter what, we will keep cheering them on. We hope to see you pack the Ira at Wednesday’s game on Mar. 2.
