Sunday Night Hockey
Sunday night's game versus the Morrisville Mustangs was one that many will not soon forget. This game was not only played on youth hockey night, but senior night, acknowledging the future generation of hockey players while honoring the seniors that are moving on in their careers. A broad range of emotions came up in this game, but the Ice Knights did what they do best and came out on top!
The boys were fresh off a 6-3 win from Saturday night's game in Brockport, and they were pumped to end the weekend with another win. When the puck dropped to start the first period, Morrisville directed it to the Ice Knights’ defensive zone right off the bat, firing a shot on freshman goaltender Adam Harris. Harris blocked the puck, but the Mustangs tried for a rebound within seconds of the first shot. With an incredible glove save, Harris shocked both the crowd and the Mustangs. Could this have been the save of the year?
As the period carried on, the Ice Knights channeled their power and spent most of their time in the offensive zone. With ten minutes on the clock, freshman forward Peter Morgan fired a shot on net from the blue line. The puck passed over the Morrisville goalkeeper's shoulder, straight into the net. Minutes after Morgan scored, sophomore defenseman Nathan Poolman scored his first career goal, moving Geneseo up 2-0.
Waiting for the period to end with only 38 seconds left on the clock, sophomore forward Greg Koutsomitis did not want the crowd to leave their seats until he scored the last goal of the period. The Geneseo Ice Knights carried the first period with a 3-0 advantage.
The second period was one for the books—right at the start, the Ice Knights were already zooming and firing shots on the Mustangs. Geneseo’s defensemen were pushing through and doing anything they could to keep the puck out of their zone. Morgan scored his second goal of the game with a rebound shot.
One minute after this goal, Morrisville scored their first goal of the game, but the Ice Knights laid that goal to rest and scored four consecutive goals—the first scored by senior captain Dan Bosio, second by senior forward Levi Wunder, another by junior forward Tyson Gilmour and, finally, one scored by freshman forward Domenic Garozzo. These goals ended the second period with a score of 8-1 Geneseo.
Third period came around and the Ice Knights were skating the Mustangs in circles to tire them out. Harris pulled off impressive saves, shutting out any opportunity for Morrisville. Three minutes into the period, Gilmour took a backhand shot—the puck traveled alongside the goalpost and into the net, making for his second goal of the game.
Morrisville started to get chippy, but they were all talk and no action. Junior defenseman Nicolas Elia was working hard and ripped shots on the net left and right, trying hard to get in a goal. Eventually, senior defenseman Matthew Doran caught a pass from senior forward Ricky Carballo and scored the tenth and final goal of the game.
Morrisville should have brought their pillows, because this game had them sleeping. In their last home game in regulation, Geneseo earned three points to beat Oswego for the top record in the SUNYAC regular season, claiming a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament and the right to host throughout the conference postseason. We look forward to seeing everyone on Mar. 2 to pack the Ira and cheer on our Ice Knights!
