Full steam ahead for the Ice Knights with two more SUNYAC wins

What a weekend the Ice Knights had, winning both their Friday night game against Oswego and their Saturday night game against Cortland, with Saturday’s game on home ice.

Geneseo started off strong in the first period on Friday night with a leading score of 2-0. They found success again in the second period. Geneseo was put on the board by junior forward Greg Koutsomitis with a fantastic goal, who was then followed by sophomore forward Stefan Mikklakos with 5 minutes remaining. They were tied in the third quarter as the Oswego Lakers scored a total of 3 times, which then forced both teams to face off in overtime. But, of course, our Knights pulled through with the last goal of the night from Miklakos, who won the game for his team. With such an edge of the seat win, Geneseo’s record rose to become 14-5-2. With a total of 25 shots on goal as opposed to Oswego’s 56 shots, Geneseo was obviously persistent with both their defense and offense, with senior goalkeeper Matt Petizian protecting the net.

On Saturday night, the Knights were met with success once again as they worked their way onto the leaderboard after avoiding a goal, with a score of 2-0 in the beginning of the first period favoring Cortland. Geneseo got their moxie back with seven minutes left in the first period as sophomore forward Cooper Fensterstock filled the net, which wouldn’t be the last time for him this game and was quickly followed by another goal by freshman forward Alex Dameski to tie the game.

These Ice Knights were on fire as they burst into the second period with yet another goal by Fensterstock to break the tie and pull ahead in the battle. A new addition to the scoreboard and the last for this game was an empty net goal from senior forward Bryan Zurowski and ended the journey with a 4-2 victory for our dear Knights. The Red Dragons delayed in scoring again after the first period because of the Geneseo Knights and sophomore goalkeeper Adam Harris and their tough defense as they held their ground and performed such an amazing show.

If you see an Ice Knight around campus make sure to give them a nice pat on the back for their hard work and their recent success! Don’t forget to support them in the flesh from the stands as they have two games this coming weekend. Although only one is home, they take on Buffalo State this Friday, Feb. 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ira S. Wilson Arena and then take their fight to Fredonia at 7:00 p.m. the next day for two more SUNYAC games.
