April recap: Women’s Lacrosse

The women’s lacrosse team has had an impressive season so far with several wins against other SUNYAC teams. Today I’ll be recapping some game highlights throughout the month of April.

Unfortunately, the month’s first game on Apr. 2 2022 resulted in the loss of a four-win winning streak, though the team played hard; after maintaining the lead in the first 10 minutes, their opponent, SUNY Cortland, ended the first quarter with a three-goal advantage. The Knights maintained the defensive throughout the rest of the game but were unable to make a substantial comeback. That being said, the team quickly bounced back at their next game against Oswego.

On Apr. 6 the team traveled to Oswego to earn an impressive victory against the Lakers team. Within the first three minutes of this game, the Knights took a three-goal lead thanks to goals from first-year attack Madelynn Brown, grad student and midfielder Megan Henderson, and grad student and attack Hannah Marafioti. As Oswego began to catch up with a few goals, the Knights maintained an eight-goal lead. Henderson achieved the final goal of the game for a score of 17-6 Knights.

Next on Apr. 9 the team conducted an even more impressive statistic of 22-4 against Potsdam, this time from home. Sophomore midfielder Emily Salanger scored within just 30 seconds of the start, propelling the team into the rest of the quarter. Senior midfielder Emma Gaenzle also showed some impressive scoring ability, scoring two back-to-back goals to achieve a three-goal advantage moving into the second quarter. Salanger returned to the scoreboard, maintaining momentum and scoring two more goals. The Knights ultimately concluded with a 22-4 win.

Next, the Knights played the Brockport Golden Eagles and, unsurprisingly, locked in another win. Brockport outscored the Knights in the first quarter, though Salanger achieved an initial lead for Geneseo. The Eagles continued to dominate in the very beginning of the second quarter, scoring three more goals. After some more goals from both teams, the game was tied up, until Henderson secured a goal and gave the Knights the advantage. Marafioti and Gaenzle tacked on a couple more goals for a close but nonetheless a winning score of 13-11.

A few days later on Apr. 16 the Knights faced Plattsburgh at home. Within the first 10 minutes of the game, five Knights players scored to take an immediate upper hand, ending the quarter with a 9-0 lead. Plattsburgh fought back with three goals and the Knights added on another for a score of 10-3 in the next quarter. The third quarter opened with four goals from the Knights. The final score was 19-5.

The second-most recent game was on Apr. 20 against Fredonia. Marafioti and Brown each scored a goal in the last few minutes of the first quarter to give Geneseo a push into the rest of the game after a fairly slow start. The team was able to maintain this momentum and ended the second half with a 13-2 lead. The team’s defense really shined in the third half, after 30 minutes went by without any scores from Fredonia. Impressive offensive and defensive skills made for a final score of 21-2.

Finally, on Saturday Apr. 23, the Knights traveled to Oneonta. Marafioti netted the first goal against the Red Dragons, although the opposing team was able to maintain a close score throughout the score. The quarter ultimately concluded with a more substantial Geneseo lead, 9-4. Into the game’s second half, Marafioti achieved her first assist of the game, setting a program record. The game concluded 21-9 Knights.

The women’s lacrosse team will play a home game against New Paltz on Saturday Apr. 30. Come out and support the team as they play for yet another victory!
