Ask Minerva #5
Dear Minerva,
I am feeling a bit worried after the election results. I have applied to a bunch of out of state graduate programs and am feeling unsure about the economic impact this may have on me. I am being told not to act due to fear but it is difficult as I feel like my future is at stake. What do you think I should do?

Dear Snarky Marky,
I don’t blame you for having some apprehension after such a large and stressful event. No matter your political views, the division and high tension in the United States right now is widespread and can impact any of us so deeply. First, take in a deep breath and remember that you are still here at this moment. There is only so much you— yourself— can control. Take the time to sit and list out things you can control and work away at those first.
Beyond recognizing your own strengths and capabilities in these trying times, I would read up on your rights. Being educated and aware of what you hold power to do or not to do can help you with some of that future planning. You mentioned applying to out of state graduate programs. Research issues that are pressing to you and how they might impact future plans.
While feeling your feelings is a MUST, you also need to consider the realistic outcomes and possibilities, planning for the future. Make sure you’re reading up on credible sources and cross-referencing between them. Each source will have their own bias but- by doing some thoughtful research- you can take our snippets of truth and apply them to your own life.
We all must hold each other through tough times in a divided world. Keep calm and carry on. We are all in this together!
Sweetest Regards,
Minerva Gulp
