The Writing Learning Center is open!

Writing is an essential part of academic life no matter what discipline you find yourself studying. Math projects, business essays, history papers, even science research and psychology studies need a second pair of eyes to look over assignments before a final submission. You could (and should) have a willing friend read it over, but why not a trained tutor as well? That’s where the Writing Learning Center comes in.

The WLC tutors, most of whom are juniors and seniors who have a complex and deep understanding of what many professors are looking for in their written assignments, are not only well-trained for the position, but also enjoy helping peers find their voice and succinctly communicate their ideas. Trained not only in grammar and mechanics but also structure, research methods, flow, and comprehension.

Why pay for Grammarly Pro when you can book a session with a tutor for free? Have a professor who’s making you learn Chicago when you’ve always written in MLA, or MLA when you’re used to APA? WLC tutors can not only help you cite and reference, but find those articles that are hidden 200 pages deep in the library databases. Are you a freshman having trouble making the jump between high school and college-level writing? Tutors are not only ready to review those fundamentals of higher-level writing, but work with you to implement them into your first essays. While each tutor isn’t a master of all the various majors and minors offered at Geneseo, the writing itself for each class is always graded under the same basic principles, and WLC tutors know them better than anyone!

The WLC expertise expands beyond academia and into the real world as well, and each WLC tutor is trained in creating and honing cover letters, resumes, internship applications, and any other application you need a check for!

Interested? You can book an appointment with any one (or more) of the WLC tutors by going to the Writing Learning Center website and finding the “Schedule an appointment” heading. This will direct you to Navigate ,where you can book as many 30 minute sessions as you see necessary with whichever tutor you feel would be most helpful. You’ll find the WLC room right next to the library in Fraser. Just head in and go around the corner!

The WLC is open from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday! You are also more than welcome to stop in without an appointment if you see that the tutor has no other attendees!

Have you always thought you had a good eye for mistakes and hiccups in others’ writing? Perhaps you would like to work as a WLC tutor in the future, and applications are now open on the same page where you book appointments, or you can email Dr. Paku (the head of the program) at paku@geneseo.edu.

We hope to see you in Fraser 208 to help you along your writing path—feel free to stop by if you ever find yourself worried about an upcoming paper!
