Upcoming rallies in Geneseo

Peace Action has hosted many rallies and marches in the past, often taking place on main street, such as this one which called for a ceasefire last semester.

The month of March is often a busy time for students, many trying to make the weeks go by faster leading up to spring break. Do not let this anticipation distract you from the upcoming Saturday, Mar. 8, 2025, which is International Women’s Day. This globally celebrated day is important to both the future and history of women and their journey with human rights.

There are many ways to recognize this day and to celebrate its importance, and one of these options is happening right outside campus. Peace Action at Geneseo has been known in the past to coordinate and plan marches open to both the public and student population, and they are continuing to do this.

Peace Action is a club on campus which defines itself as, “A student chapter of a national, grassroots organization committed to organizing a citizen movement.” They have weekly meetings that take place on Wednesday at 6:00 pm in Bailey 246. Here, they discuss a variety of topics, or near the time of events, make signs for when their marches.

On Saturday, Mar. 8, Peace Action will be hosting an International Women’s Day march on the corner of Main Street and 20A, which is located right in front of Doty Hall. The location can easily be found by looking at a campus map and is just a few minutes walk from the majority of academic buildings. The march will take place from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on this corner of Main Street.

After the march has concluded, there will also be a social hour event held at the Interfaith Center, which is located on Franklin Street. This is the perfect time to connect with other students who share the same values and to further educate yourself on topics you may not be familiar with.

Alongside this, there is another important event happening this week on Friday, Mar. 7, 2025— the day this paper releases. You may have seen fliers with the headline “Stand Up for Science” around campus. This is a rally for science that all students are being encouraged to attend.

The rally will be held from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm in front of the ISC building. Students are encouraged to bring their peers, their voices, and signs as well. The rally will be centering on a wide variety of topics such as the differences of sex and gender from a biological stance, the science behind vaccines and how damaging health misinformation can be, federal funding, funding research, effects of anti-diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) initiatives, and many other important issues that need to be addressed within the academic community in Geneseo and nationally.

These issues all have long-term implications which makes learning about them now even more important. All are welcome to attend this rally, even if they fear that they are not educated on one or more of the topics listed above. These students are actually encouraged to attend as a perfect opportunity to learn and grow.

The basis of this rally is that science is for everyone. While there are many STEM majors on campus, there is a large population of students who are more involved in the liberal arts. Science is for all students regardless of major, minor, or concentration.

Both of these rallies are a fantastic way to get involved with issues bigger than yourself. The science community on campus and Peace Action are both very welcoming groups and hope to see you at their respective demonstrations.
