Looking at the week ahead: Exciting SUNY Geneseo events to check out

As we kick off the 2023 Fall semester, Geneseo organizations and clubs are kicking off the year with tons of amazing events to check out. Here is a look at some of the many events happening on campus during the next week, and how to get involved with them.

The first event to take a look at is Geneseo Late Knights’ (GLK) collaboration with the African Student Association (ASA). The GLK: Roll Bounce with ASA will be taking place on Saturday, Sept. 23 in the MacVittie College Union Ballroom from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Roller skates will be provided, and this event is a great way to dance, show off your skating skills, and listen to afrobeats. As always, all GLK events are free!

If you’re looking for a more academic event, then the Hispanic Heritage Month guest speaker: Dr. Cécile Caroline Eveng lecture is for you. This lecture will cover diasporic spaces and construction of Afro-European identities in “Those who dared” by Lucía Asue Mbomio and in “Behold the Dreamers" by Imbolo Mbue. Dr. Eveng teaches at Maroua Université de Cameroon and is an expert on Afro-feminism and Afropean identities. The event will take place virtually over Microsoft Teams, and will be conducted in Spanish, with a Question and Answer panel in Spanish, English, and French. It will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 27 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. For the Teams link, please contact Susana Castillo-Rodriguez at castillos@geneseo.edu.

Want to get in touch with your artistic side? Check out Iris Magazine’s first event of the semester. The Iris Collage Night is an amazing event for those who want to get involved with a literary arts organization on campus. Join Iris Mag for a relaxing night of making collages, listening to music, and chatting about the magazine and queer writing. The collage night will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 27 in Welles 134 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Interested in video games, board games, or card games? Check out Geneseo Area Gaming Group (GAGG)’s Magic the Gathering Event. On Friday, Sept. 29 GAGG will be hosting Magic the Gathering games in the MacVittie College Union in rooms 322 and 323 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.—no experience required!

Not seeing an event you’re interested in? There are tons of club and organization meetings happening every day at Geneseo from academic groups like Model United Nations or Chemistry Club, to culture groups like the Filipino Student Union and Shakti, to more creative clubs like Art History Club and the Craftivist Coalition. These clubs, and so many more, hold weekly general meetings that any students can attend. To find out when a club is meeting, you can check the SUNY Geneseo Events Calendar for more information.
