Knights Philanthropic Council trivia event

Knights Philanthropic Council (KPC) hosted its first-ever trivia this past Wednesday, Nov. 15. For those who did not know, KPC (previously known as Phonoton) is a fairly new organization on campus that consists of a group of students who work to steward our alumni donors, while educating the campus about the great impact our donors have on our community.

To spread the word about themselves and their mission, KPC held a Philanthropy Trivia Night in Bailey where students competed to win a small donation for the on-campus organization they represented. We had teams representing Alpha Kappa Phi, Delta Phi Epsilon, Alpha Kappa Psi, Sigma Delta Tau, Sigma Kappa, and the Inter-Greek Council. Each team had to answer questions on different topics such as music, philanthropy, sports, and more.

Trivia was separated into five rounds, with each round having ten questions that were both multiple choice and short form, and each round focused on a different category. Round one was “Celebrities in Philanthropy,” with questions that asked the contestants about various celebrities and their charity organizations.

Round two was on general sports questions such as “Where was the 2016 Summer Olympics hosted?”  and “Who is the most decorated Olympian of all time?”

Round three was “Geneseo Philanthropy,” where we shared tidbits of Geneseo’s philanthropic history in the form of questions.

After round three we took a short break for contestants to get some snacks and use the restroom before we continued to the next round. Round four was about music! The four teams had questions such as “What Grammy-winning artist holds the record for the most Grammys won by a female artist?” and “What was the first music video ever played on MTV when the channel launched in 1981?.” Round five was the final round, the category was “Charitable Foundations,” which focused on various charities across the United States. Afterward, the contestants were surprised with a Final Jeopardy round, a last-ditch effort to secure first place. Some teams played it safe and others risked it all for the win.

KPC worked tirelessly throughout the semester to prepare for this game of trivia, but they do more on campus than just hosting fun trivia nights. As mentioned, we try to educate the campus on the great impact our donors have on our community, this does not only pertain to the students however, as we recently started connecting to our alumni via vlog-style videos through Thank-View; we have been showing our alumni what's happening on campus and where their donations are going.

Another thing that we do at KPC is connect our younger alumni to opportunities and workshops to help them start their careers after graduation. Trivia is also not our only event for students on campus. In the spring, KPC holds a day where students can write “Thank You” notes in exchange for free iced coffee. Knights Philanthropic Council was happy to host trivia night for everyone, and happy to continue all of the work that goes into philanthropy at Geneseo.
