Between the Lines (BTL) is one of SUNY Geneseo’s all-gender acapella groups. In the past, BTL has been known for its love of performing indie songs that may be a little underground or removed from the everyday listener. There is always an audience for different types of music, but within the current population of college students, the majority tend to enjoy mainstream artists on campus. We support all of the acapella groups since they bring such a fun energy to campus life, however, everyone better prepare for the new energy BTL brings to campus this semester.

With rehearsals on Wednesday and Sunday nights, BTL, plus the help of the president, Katie Edwards, and the music director, Courtney Duggan, illuminate Brodie 208 with new music that is fun for all. Soon, the Wadsworth Auditorium will be filled with members as they perform Børns 2015 pop hit “Electric Love.” With the fun, connected rhythms and the exciting ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs,’  energy is rushing through each member's veins as they connect through the music; with the singular goal of performing this beloved hit to each other and an audience.

Second, the members will introduce the audience to the wholesome words of Niall Horan’s “Never Grow Up.” This may be the song that is least likely to be recognized, but the sweet introductory chords and the harmonies from the altos will certainly capture any audience’s hearts and attention, just like it has done for the BTL members. In addition to Niall Horan’s song, BTL is adding One Direction to their set list with the fan favorite “Story of My Life.” As the club watched the music video to prepare to learn and rehearse the arrangement, nostalgia hit, and a happy energy filled the space instantly; the audience will not know what had happened when they hear the familiar words of Harry, Niall, Liam, Louis, and Zayn! The inner fangirls will hopefully rise up and share this proud and happy energy the group has effortlessly reproduced.

Lastly, and the predicted fan favorite, BTL plans on taking the house down with “Mr Brightside” by The Killers. As the club voted for what songs they were doing this semester, this was a unanimous decision. In rehearsal, members jam out to this song with fun dance moves and strong, supporting vocals. The energy that is brought out every night of rehearsal is unmatched and is hoped to be the focal point of the upcoming all-acapella concert.

There are also some other very exciting things that BTL has prepared for everyone. Four talented new kids just joined the group, ranging from baritone to soprano. They have already been welcomed into the group, and other members have noted how they add to the positive energy. There will also be surprise senior songs that the members eagerly await to announce! They also have planned a collaboration with Emmelodics, one of the other all-gender acapella groups on campus, with a performance of “Everywhere” by Fleetwood Mac.

When participating in clubs on campus, particularly those of the acapella variety, it is pretty standard to expect an engaging and welcoming environment. BTL provides its members with this standard and an energetic presence for its audience. With their student-led arrangements and student-run rehearsals, BTL and the other acapella groups will bring the energy at the all-acapella concert on Nov. 3, 2024, in the Wadsworth Auditorium at 2:00 p.m.
