A look ahead at the events calendar

In the final stretch before Thanksgiving break, Geneseo and its student organizations are hosting tons of events and activities that are worth checking out if you’re looking to get involved, or just for something to do on campus.

This Friday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m., Peace Action Geneseo will be hosting a Rally For Peace in the village park. They will be calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, as well as peaceful negotiations and more.

On Saturday, Nov. 11, the Japanese Culture Club will be hosting Japan Night in the Union Ballroom. The doors will open at 5 p.m., and entry will require tickets, which are $6.00 for students. The event will supply food, and there will be music, dancing, a fashion show, and a giveaway prize. For more information, check out their Instagram page.

If you are looking for something to entertain yourself, that doesn't necessarily require participation, Geneseo’s Dance Ensemble is hosting their Fall performances. The shows are Nov. 9-11, at 7:30 p.m., and Nov. 12 at 2:00 p.m. This year's performance is titled ‘Shifting Perspectives,’ and will feature choreography written by students. It will take place in the Alice Austen Theatre in Brodie Hall.

The Native American Heritage Month Speaker series will have an event on Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. in the Multicultural Center in Blake Hall. The lecture will be given by Dr. Mishuana Goeman, of the Tonawanda Band of Seneca, who is a Professor of Indigenous Studies at the University of Buffalo currently. This event is hosted by Multicultural Affairs, and events like these are supported by mandatory student activity fees, so they don’t require tickets to attend.

For students interested in attending a sporting event, there are quite a few upcoming in the next few weeks. On Nov. 17 the Ice Knights will face Cortland at 7 p.m. They have one other home game before the break, on Tuesday, Nov. 21, against Elmira College at 4 p.m., both in the Wilson Ice Arena. Additionally, the men’s basketball team will face Houghton College on Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. in the Schrader Hall gym.

On Nov. 19 at 4 p.m., GOLD will be hosting a Student Business Expo. This will be an opportunity for any students who are interested in business, and a way for students who own their own businesses or “side-hustles” to showcase what they do and advertise their work. Even if you don’t run a business, it can be a great way to support small businesses, and your peers and friends. Small business owners can sign up to table at the event here.

While these are a few varied, usually one-time events, it’s important to remember that several different student organizations also host general meetings weekly. The organizations on campus span from academic-focused groups, like the Neuroscience Club and Political Affairs Club, to culture and community-focused clubs, like the Latinx Student Association, and The Filipino Student Union, to interest-based organizations, like Art Club or Film Club, or even the Lamron. General organization meetings are open to any students interested in attending. Meeting information such as days, times, and locations can be found on the Events Calendar on the SUNY Geneseo website.
