Women’s volleyball clinch four seed in SUNYAC tournament after impressive wins
The Geneseo women’s varsity volleyball team added on to an already impressive winning streak this past weekend, pushing it to five consecutive wins in a row. The past two wins were both accumulated on the road, and in dominant fashion; the win on Oct. 21 came versus Buffalo State, with Geneseo winning three sets to one.
Arsenal set to recapture their glory days with vintage win Tottenham
In previous seasons, the words “Arsenal” and “relegation” have been used unironically in the same sentence. During Unai Emery’s unfortunate spell as manager, Arsenal became synonymous with lengthy injury lists and disappointing results, and it became difficult to see the Gunners competing for a spot in the top four of the Premier League. Despite a rocky recent history, manager Mikel Arteta has led Arsenal two points clear of Premier League Champions Manchester City at the top of the table and are looking more like the 2003-04 Invincibles than they ever have.
The battle of Tom vs Time is coming to an end
In the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft, the New England Patriots took a gamble on a quarterback from Michigan. Nobody could have predicted what he would become, not even himself. It is quite rare that such a late draft pick turns out to be a superstar, or even a starter, but Tom Brady was the exception.
Injury facing Dolphins’ quarterback leads to CTE concerns
On Sept. 25, Miami Dolphins’ quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered one of the scariest injuries in football history in a game against the Bills. While being tackled, his head snapped back and bounced off the unforgiving turf. After struggling to stand up, he took six uneasy steps before nearly crumbling back to the ground, if not for his teammates who held him up. Tagovailoa would return later that game and lead the Dolphins to a 21-19 victory over Buffalo.
Bills hold on to avenge playoff loss in Kansas City
The Bills faced the Kansas City Chiefs in their biggest game of the season yet this past Sunday in week six. Buffalo looked to avenge their heartbreaking divisional loss to the Chiefs last year. The Bills were coming off of a dominant showcase against the Steelers, while the 4-1 Chiefs looked to keep rolling after their close win over the Raiders. Notable Bills’ inactives for the game included wide receiver Jake Kumerow (ankle), and multiple healthy scratches highlighted by running back Zach Moss.
Ice Knights roll in 6-3 exhibition win over Alvernia
On Oct. 15, the Geneseo Ice Knights played their first exhibition game of the season against the Alvernia Golden Wolves, who are in their inaugural season and the newest member of the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC). The Ice Knights looked to make this game a strong start to their season and live up to the high expectations set for them as the reigning National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) runner-up and top-ranking SUNYAC team.
Men’s Volleyball cards first tournament wins in organization history
The men’s club volleyball team has started their fall season strong, taking two tournament wins in their first competition of the year. The club, which sends their A and B teams to competitions statewide, is a Division II club team recognized by the National Club Volleyball Federation and the Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association. This past weekend, they attended a massive tournament hosted by 12-time state champions and two-time conference champions SUNY Brockport. Competition on Sunday included a total of 16 teams across ten schools, all conference competitors: Cornell, the Rochester Institute of Technology, the University at Buffalo, Stony Brook University, St. Bonaventure University, Syracuse University, Binghamton University, and Geneseo’s friendly rivals the Oswego Kraken all brought teams.
2022-23 NBA season preview
The 2022-23 NBA season started this past week, and after several coaching changes as well as roster shake-ups, it is as good a time as any to take a look at what could be in store for the league this year.
Men’s Rugby keeps undefeated season alive with win versus Ithaca
Last Saturday, Oct. 1, the Geneseo men’s rugby team had a home game against their rivals, the Ithaca Bombers. After coming in from a win against Le Moyne College and a victory via mercy rule (having a lead at any point in the game of 40 points or more) against Buffalo State, the Warthogs looked to keep their undefeated season alive.
Field hockey continues remarkable season with another shutout victory
For the past several seasons, field hockey has been a sport that SUNY Geneseo has excelled at. With six consecutive winning seasons and phenomenal interconference records, the Knights have been a struggle for many competing teams to handle. Through outstanding play and coaching, winning has become part of the culture for Geneseo. Many teams go through ups and downs as the years pass, but the Knights have been on that upslope for a while, and the 2022 season is no different thus far.
Sabres to continue ice-cold streak this season
As the NHL preseason continues, there is speculation as to how the season will go—will the Avalanche defend their title? Will Auston Matthews have another historic year? And perhaps the most rhetorical question: Will the Sabres have another disappointing season? While it is never good to assume, expecting the Sabres to have a bad season is a pretty safe bet.
Bills return to form in week four, taking down Ravens
The Bills looked to bounce back in week four after their first loss of the season against the Dolphins. The team looked as though they had a chance to start their season 3-0 towards the end of the game last week, but frustrations ran wild as poor clock management spoiled the opportunity. The team was set to play the Baltimore Ravens, who were sitting at 2-1 on the year and coming off of a win against the ever-struggling New England Patriots. Notable inactives for week four included defensive tackle Ed Oliver (ankle), DT Jordan Phillips (hamstring), and wide receiver Jake Kumerow (ankle). Star safety Jordan Poyer (foot) and cornerback Dane Jackson (neck), who suffered a horrific injury in week two, were back in the starting lineup for Buffalo.
Men’s Ultimate Frisbee starts strong in first tournament of the season
SUNY Geneseo Men’s Club Ultimate Frisbee (Snail) competed in their first matches of the season this past weekend, traveling to Youngstown, NY for the Theodore Seuss Geisel Memorial Ultimate tournament. Snail divided their team into two sections, X and Y, in order for each player to make the most of the experience. The two teams were able to enjoy the outstanding culture of the sport with other local teams looking to do the same.
Jets continue to disappoint New York with yet another slow start
Roll the clock back to the 2010 NFL season, and you will see the New York Jets’ last playoff appearance—not only was it the Jets’ most recent last playoff game, it was also the beginning to the longest active playoff drought in the NFL. When a team has only one winning season in the last decade, something is clearly wrong. It can be quite difficult to place your finger on the problem when the team is so underwhelming, but, in the case of the Jets, the front office is the culprit.
Club Softball battles against U of R in first game series of the semester
Geneseo’s Club Softball game team took the field for the first time this semester against the University of Rochester on Saturday Sept. 24. The team competed in a hard-fought triple header, ready to reclaim a win after two losses to the U of R Stingers in the cold Apr. weather last semester. With an expanded e-board and a brand-new game team compiled including strong returners and promising new players, the team put a newfound pressure on the Stingers, and ended the day winning one of the three total games played.
Bills fall to Dolphins in first loss of the season
The Bills have been dominant throughout the first two weeks of their season, tearing apart last year’s Super Bowl Champions THE Los Angeles Rams and American Football Conference (AFC) #1 seed Tennessee Titans. Buffalo went into Sunday’s matchup against the Miami Dolphins looking to begin their season 3-0 with their first division win of the year. Miami had done well for themselves as well so far, coming off of a hard-fought victory against the Baltimore Ravens and also sitting at 2-0 for the season. But Injuries took a toll on Buffalo last week, as notable inactives for week three included starters defensive tackle Ed Oliver (ankle), safety Jordan Poyer (foot), cornerback Dane Jackson (neck), and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips (hamstring). Safety Micah Hyde has also been ruled out for the season with a neck injury, a huge blow to the Bills’ defense.
Women’s Rugby is off to a confident start in their fall season
On Saturday, Sept. 24, The Geneseo Women’s Rugby team had their home opening game against Buffalo State. Although this was a non-league match, the Warthogs put their hearts on the field and played an amazing game.
Geneseo volleyball put on stunning performance at RIT Invitational
The Geneseo women’s volleyball team won three of their four matches at the RIT Invitational last week. After a 0-3 loss early Friday evening, the team bounced back and defeated Nazareth three sets to nil just a few hours later. The momentum carried over into Saturday as they bested RIT 3-1, and pummeled Lasell University 3-0 shortly after.
Women’s tennis dominates at St. Lawrence Invitational with new coach
The Geneseo women’s tennis team welcomed new head coach Alan Heverly at the start of this season. Previously, Heverly was an assistant tennis coach at Lehigh University, an NCAA Division I college in Pennsylvania. Following his time at Lehigh, Heverly became the head coach of both the men’s and women’s teams at Moravian University (Division III). With numerous accolades under his belt, Heverly seems like a great fit at Geneseo, and will hopefully continue his successes with the Knights.
