The Geneseo Women’s Soccer Team had another amazing game this past Saturday, Oct. 26. With a late afternoon start, the Knights came out on the field with grit and a desire to win. This special competition was the Knights’ senior game, honoring seniors such as goalkeeper Mollie Collins, midfielder Lindsey Matthews, and defender Lauren DeMura.

Although it took them a while to find the back of the net, as they had nine shots on goal before making their tenth as forward, graduate student Juliette Frischmann brought the ball up the field to take a shot into the net—relieving spectators and teammates alike. Frischman had two more attempted shots shortly after that from out top, but that did not discourage her from trying. Less than a minute later, she took another shot on goal, but this one proved successful. Frischman took a chance as she got a pass from junior forward Abby Foster to send it past the SUNY Polytechnic Institute goalkeeper, bringing the score to 2-0.

With some quick substitutions from both sides, the Knights were awarded corner kick after corner kick, ready to come out hot and eager for the numbers on the scoreboard to increase. With five minutes left of the first half, freshman forward Kirsten Shepherd was assisted by another freshman forward, Casey Holstein, for a well-deserved and successful shot on goal. This was not Shepherd’s first goal of the season, but it was definitely a memorable one. Defensively, the Knights kept the ball away from the goalkeeper and successfully held the ball on the competition’s territory and away from theirs. Defensive players like sophomore Lauren Demura demonstrated aggressive tackles—ensuring the ball never reached the crease.

Geneseo went on the field with the same anticipation as they did in the first period, as they had four unsuccessful shots on goal until Frischman, once again, buried the ball in the net—bulleting it past Poly’s goalkeeper. With an impressive hat trick for Frischman, she was not done yet, and less than a minute later, she gave the ball a quick kick into the back of the net as well. This brought Geneseo’s score from 2-0 in the first half to 4-0 15 minutes into the second half of the game. The Knight's defense once again kept the Wildcats at bay, as the opposing team did not successfully get a shot on goal, although they tried. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily McLouth denied any shots that came close to the net.

Shortly after a yellow card on a SUNY Poly player, Shepherd got the ball up the field before getting stopped by Poly’s defense and passing it off to Foster for the second to last goal of the afternoon. This brought Geneseo up to 5-0 with 30 minutes left in the second half after a yellow card was given to a player on Poly’s team. Substitutions from both sides between 75 and 80 minutes occurred as both teams geared up for the last 10 minutes of the game. At the 84-minute mark, freshman forward Carly Lawrence got the ball to the back of the net as they crawled into the last 8 minutes of the game. Closely following the sixth and final goal of the game, a red card was given to the same player on the opposite side from earlier. This did not faze the Knights, though, as they ran on the field to celebrate their senior day win.

The Knights have one more home game on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 4:00 pm, against Brockport before the Empire 8 tournament begins.
