Men’s Basketball tallies second straight win to start season
Geneseo’s men’s basketball team took on the Medaille Mavericks at home on Tuesday, Nov. 15 as they went into their second game at home and fourth total on the season. The Knights looked to make it two wins in a row after defeating Stevens Institute of Technology this past Saturday in the Widener Tip-Off for Autism Awareness Tournament. Medaille went into the game looking to remain undefeated after taking down Cazenovia College in their first and only game of the season thus far.
Immediately upon tip-off, the Knights came out hot, as they scored multiple baskets and jumped out to an early 10-3 lead. A great play was made by sophomore guard Sebastian Pacheco, as he was able to get a steal and convert as he assisted senior guard Raymond Grabowski’s layup on the fast break. In the first half, the Knights shot 8-10 from the free throw line and were able to extend their lead to 29-22 with under five minutes left in the half. In the final moments of the half, Medaille was able to go on a big run, outscoring the Knights 12-4, to take a 34-33 lead after trailing most of the first half.
In the second frame, the Knights again came out strong with big time plays being made by senior guard Harrison Dignan, who drew multiple charging calls and made great passes. Freshman forward Andrew Morrow also stepped up and made several great defensive plays, keeping Geneseo’s lead steady. Midway through the second half, the Knights were up and looking to extend their lead against Medaille as the two teams went back-and-forth scoring baskets. All hope seemed lost for the Mavericks, but they turned things around hitting several timely shots down the stretch to take a late lead. With under three minutes left, however, Dignan and Grabowski each hit big three-pointers to help seal the deal for the Knights, who went on to win 70-61.
This was a huge win for Geneseo, as they were able to get back to .500 with their second win in a row and a now 2-2 record on the season. The Knights’ next game is on Tuesday, Nov. 22, as they play on the road against the Pioneers of Alfred State who also have a record of 2-2, and like Geneseo, are looking to have another great season.
