After a rough start to the season, the Geneseo Men’s Basketball team is finishing their regular season strong following a 81-53 win against Keuka College this past weekend.
On Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, the Geneseo Men's Basketball team defeated Keuka College on home turf in the Schrader Gymnasium with an impressive score of 81-53 to continue their winning streak after a tough start to the season.
As the first half started, Geneseo was awarded a quick turnover, followed by a disappointing steal from Keuka. The Knights' defense was working hard as sophomore forward guard Robert Perocolosi quickly grabbed the ball and headed to the net off a fastbreak in the paint to get his team on the scoreboard with a clean layup.
With another turnover and a quick three-pointer outside the crease, freshman guard Trevor Hofer put Geneseo ahead with a five-point lead. The Knights were on a streak as sophomore forward guard Josh Garelle added two points to the score with another safe layup.
The Knights remained ahead during the first half with safe defensive steals and quick, impressive rebounds on the defensive side. Freshman guard Colin Gentile stole the ball to give Geneseo possession yet again, awarding the hometeam with easy free throws.
Although impressive, the offense was on fire with another jumper in the paint by Perocolosi with help from Hofer, who helped the team with a safe three-pointer off a fastbreak yet again. It was the night of three-point baskets for the Knights as players like Hofer and graduate student guard Micheal Gentile kept running up the score before the first half of the game was over.
When halftime came, the Knights were up by 21 points, with a triumphant win in their sights, ending the half with two free-throws by Hofer. With a slow and rocky start to the second half, the Knights pulled through with a safe three-point basket from the side by Perocolosi. Colin Gentile was working overtime on the defensive front, taking rebound after rebound, returning possession to the Knights, and preserving their lead on the board.
The pressure was on the Keuka Wolves as the Knights kept their guards up and were on their toes, making rebound after rebound and regaining possession of the ball. This was the game of three-point baskets, with five more within the 20 minutes of the second half.
With Garelle making two fastbreak free throws in a row, the Knights looked good at the halfway point of the second half. Geneseo was able to keep Keuka at bay with minimal breaks to the net and dotted layups and three-point throws.
Hofer scored the most points for the Knights, with a high of 32, 10 of those being three-pointers, and had the best performance of his freshman career during this game against Keuka. Garelle hit double digits alongside Hofer, with 16 points total, and led the team defensively with 11 rebounds.
With 28 points awarded in the paint, 16 points off of turnovers, 12 fast break points, and zero technical fouls, Geneseo had a successful game, rewarding them with a two-game winning streak and five more games before the Empire 8 tournament.
The following two games will be on home turf: on Friday, Feb. 7, against St. John Fisher University, and on Saturday, Feb. 8, against Nazareth University. Tip-off on Friday’s game is at 7:30 pm, and Saturday’s game is at 4:00 pm in the Schrader Gym. Be sure to come and support your fellow Geneseo students as they embark on their journey to victory!
