Geneseo Basketball rounds out 2022 with non-conference games

The Geneseo men’s basketball team was back in action at home in Geneseo after a tough loss last Tuesday, where they faced the Keuka Wolves and lost 76-55 in a hard-fought game. The Knights had a lot of frustration after the tough loss and were looking to take out the Saints of St. Lawrence last Saturday, Dec. 10.

The Knights came out to a slow start, not scoring till the 15:30 mark when Senior Kevin Ranaghan scored a go-ahead layup in the paint. Soon after, the Knights finally were able to find an offensive rhythm, which resulted in a 9-3 run for the Knights to take a 14-11 lead with 13:09 remaining in the half. Plays were made down the stretch by sophomore Sebastian Pacheco and senior Raymond Grabowski to keep within arm’s reach, but it was hard to lead when St. Lawrence then went on to shoot 9-16 (56.25%) from 3 point land in the first half and go into the break with a 42-25 over the Knights.

In the second half, it was more of the same from St. Lawrence; they still shot a solid 42% from the three-point line to ward off any attempted comeback from the Knights. Grabowski finished with a quiet 19 point game, and senior Cole Kattan finished with 11 points and 3 assists as the Knights fell to the saints 85-70. At the conclusion of Saturday’s game, Geneseo men’s basketball’s record dropped to 5-5 overall.

The Geneseo women’s basketball team hit the road on Saturday, as they traveled to Geneva to face William Smith’s Herons. The Knights were coming off three straight wins, toppling Buffalo State and Fredonia at home and Medaille on the road. The Knights were looking to keep their win streak going to four games going into winter break.

The Knights started the game on a 13-2 run started by junior forward Kerry Dennin, who earned 7 points. The Herons then responded with a 9-0 run of their own, but sophomore Mackenzie Reigle hit a three to quiet the run right before the end of the first quarter, giving Geneseo a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams scored baskets to start the second quarter, with the Knights then pulling away on a 8-0 run to up their lead to 28-15 with just over four minutes remaining in the half. Dennin stepped up, hitting a mid-range jumper and got a steal, which then created a breakaway layup right before the buzzer to give the Knights a 36-19 lead at halftime.

William Smith started the half with two scores, but Geneseo kept the Herons at bay, even though they went 2-14 from the floor in the third quarter. The Knights entered the final break with a 13-point lead. William Smith decreased the Geneseo lead to 10 points with 5:14 remaining, but the Knights went on one last run of their own with eight straight points to take a 56-38 lead with 1:15 to go, which went on to be the final score. Dennin led the Knights with 21 points and ten rebounds to finish with a double double, and Lauren Romito had a monster game of her own with 17 points and 19 rebounds. Romito also received SUNYAC player of the week, averaging 17 points and 16 rebounds, helping the Knights improve to 6-2.
