The SUNY Geneseo Ice Knights dominated this past weekend, racking up wins over SUNY Fredonia and Buffalo State, improving to 11-2-0 for the season and 6-1-0 in State University of New York Conference (SUNYAC) play.

On Friday, Dec. 1, freshman goaltender Jacob Torgner led the Ice Knights to their first shutout of the season, as they swept the SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils 4-0. The Ice Knights started the game off early when sophomore forward Alex Dameski found the back of the net only one minute into play He was assisted by fifth-year forward Tyson Gilmour and freshman defenseman Sterling Wolters.

The scoring didn’t stop there, as sophomore defenseman Dakota Zarudny gave Geneseo a two-point lead after a wrist shot was assisted by junior forward Stefan Mikalakos and freshman forward Luke Panchisin just ten minutes later.

After a quiet second frame, the third period was electric: with 5:20 left, senior forward Jared Thomas scored to give Geneseo a 3-0 lead, with assists credited to Zarudny and sophomore forward Cannon Green. With a perfect finish to the night, Panchisin recorded an assist and goal to bring his season points total to 11 points in 11 collegiate games.

The Ice Knights weren’t done, though, as they completed another clean sweep—this time against the Buffalo State Bengals on Saturday, Dec. 2. In the first period, the team capitalized on two power play opportunities, with both Gilmour and Dameski scoring. After that, with a minute left in the period, Zarudny tallied the Ice Knights’ third goal of the night, assisted by Miklakos (his second assist of the night) and fellow senior defenseman Alex Wilkins.

Geneseo kept their fire in the second period, with Miklakos scoring at the 8:59 mark, assisted by Gilmour and Zarudny, to keep the Ice Knights with a 3-0 lead. Dameski and Gilmour tallied their second and fourth points of the night, respectively, after their assists on junior forward Peter Morgan’s goal. Between the pipes, Torgner recorded his second collegiate shutout of his career.

Gilmour, who had one goal and three assists over the two-game set, led the weekend with four total points. He was followed closely behind by Dameski, who tallied two goals and one assist, Miklakos who put up one goal and two assists, and Zarudny, Panchisin, and Morgan who each had one goal and one assist.

The Ice Knights will take on Skidmore College (9-0-2) on Friday, Dec. 8 at the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena at 7:00 p.m. The team will look for revenge as they fell 4-3 in their last matchup against the Thoroughbreds on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022.

In their last meeting, Skidmore capitalized on power play opportunities as they went four for five on power-play goals, and the Ice Knights will look to mitigate them this time around. Geneseo’s squad is averaging 3.9 points and 35.9 shots per game, which is above average compared to previous opponents this season, and will help them immensely in the matchup.
