Geneseo Women’s Soccer ends their weekend with a tie against Russell Sage
This past Monday, Sept. 28, the Women’s soccer team played a hard game against Russell Sage, coming out of it with a 0-0 tie. With 274 spectators in attendance, the Geneseo Knights put on a good show and left it all out on the field. The Knights came out hot at the start of the first period with long-term possession of the ball, traveling up the field to gain yards before attempting to sink the ball into the net.
The first attempt at a goal was by junior forward Abby Foster, but unfortunately hit the gloves on Sage’s goalkeeper. Sage’s goalie repeatedly defended the net from Geneseo’s offense, but that did not stop the Knights from advancing forward and continuously taking shots on goal. Although none proved successful, Geneseo was far from discouraged. Players such as graduate student forward Lindsey Clar did not let Sage’s defense stop her from cutting through their defense and making her way to the crease. With frequent substitutions from both teams, the competition was anything but easy, and the Knights held their own. Graduate student forward Julliette Frischmann, senior midfield Lindsey Matthews, freshman forward Kirsten Shepard, junior forward Nadia Jaworowicz, and freshman Carly Lawrence each took shots on goal before the end of the first period.
Defensively, Geneseo was putting up a good fight as well. Sage failed to complete any shots on goal. The Knights were awarded five fouls against Sage and had two corner kicks before the first period ended. The Knights were ready for halftime with seven attempted shots on goal and one yellow card.
Two minutes into the second half, Foster from out top and Frischmann from the bottom center had two more attempted shots on goal but were unsuccessful. This was followed by a corner kick for Geneseo and an unsuccessful shot by Sage, beautifully saved by senior goalkeeper Mollie Collins. After struggling to get through Genseo’s defense, Sage broke through to the Knights' last line of defense, but Collins impressively saved each shot—keeping the score at an even 0-0.
Back on offense, Matthews from the bottom right, Frischmann from the bottom left, Jaworowicz from the bottom left, and junior forward Abby Dunnigan all had goal attempts and, sadly, did not put a number on the scoreboard. With a free kick in minute 84, Abby Dunnigan tried to go for a header into the goal but just missed by mere inches.
The Knights were not giving up yet as they tried to break the tie but kept their focus on their defensive strategies, which proved to keep them from being scored on, largely thanks to Collins, who made save after save and kept Geneseo from being goalless. Collins made four saves this game, which puts her at 51 for the season—only four less than her season total last year. Geneseo’s defense is strong, and in this game, they put up a wall, not letting any ball fly past and into the net.
Geneseo now sits at a record of 4- 3- 2 for this season. Hoping to make their number of wins grow, Geneseo will go into their next two games this week with their hopes high and their energy up. The next time the women’s soccer team plays is Wednesday, Oct. 2, and Saturday, Oct. 5, at Utica University at 4:00 p.m. If you see a soccer player around campus, make sure to wish them luck!
