Geneseo Ice Knights take on Brockport Golden Eagles in the SUNYAC Semifinals
The Ice Knights were coming in hot on Wednesday night (Mar. 2, 2022) to start their SUNYAC Semifinals. Geneseo already has a winning streak against SUNY Brockport this season—this game was going to be a piece of cake.
The first period rolled in. The second the puck dropped, the Ice Knights were already at it, taking shots on the Golden Eagles’ net. Senior forward Levi Wunder fired a shot but got blocked. The boys were making quick turnarounds in each other’s zones. The Ira was packed with fans to cheer on the team.
Junior forward Tyson Gilmour made an amazing hit to center ice that helped put the puck in our possession. Geneseo fought for the puck in the offensive zone as they continued to take shots on net. The Ice Knights and Golden Eagles skated hard during this scoreless period.
As the second period started, the Ice Knights, as always, immediately started taking shots on net. Junior defenseman Alex Wilkins was working hard and making moves with the puck in his possession to get it out of his zone. Both teams were rocking each other with rough plays.
Freshman forward Domenic Garozzo skated into the Golden Eagles’ zone, got a pass from freshman forward Peter Morgan and fired an incredible backhand shot right in front of the goalie crease; the puck passed right over the goalie’s shoulder into the net. This was Garozzo’s seventh goal of the season. About five minutes later, senior defenseman Chris Perna zoomed through multiple defenders to set up senior forward Dan Bosio to fire a shot from the hash marks and bag a power-play-goal. The second period ended with the Ice Knights pushing a two-goal advantage.
The third period started off with Brockport on a power play. Junior goaltender Matt Petizian worked hard to make great saves. The boys had a long period of back-and-forth plays. With eleven minutes left in the period, Brockport fired a shot and scored a goal, but the Ice Knights continued to fire shots on Brockport.
With two minutes left in the period Geneseo was on a power play and the Golden Eagles pulled their goalie. Everyone was on the edge of their seats. Morgan dumped the puck and Bosio took it off the boards and shot an empty-netter goal, his second goal of the game, sealing a 3-1 Ice Knights victory.
The Knights advanced into the SUNYAC Championship game and moved on to host Oswego in a rematch of their 2020 championship game.
