Women’s golf approaches end of season with two events

The Geneseo women’s golf team continued their season with two events this past week. The team traveled both times, once to compete at the Keuka College Invitational and then to play at the Cortland Martin/Wallace Invitational. The Knights took second place at the Keuka Invitational on Wednesday, Apr. 12, and fifth at the Cortland Martin/Wallace Invitational over the weekend of Apr. 15 and 16.

Freshman Jillian Draper finished in third place at Keuka, the best among the Knights. The team finished with a score of 94 (+22), only six strokes behind the leader at the end of the event. Fellow freshman Brooklyn Rogers was only a few behind Draper and tied for fourth place with a score of 96 (+24).

More Knights were just slightly behind, with freshmen Isabelle Healey and Sara Ippolito finishing ninth and eleventh, respectively. Healey ended with 101 (+29) while Ippolito capped the day with a score of 107 (+35). Freshmen Shannon McCrory and Abby Tebo went on to finish in 13th and 14th, while junior Kerry Dennin finished in 15th place at the event. They scored 110 (+38), 111 (+39), and 118 (+46), respectively. As a team, Geneseo finished in second place behind Utica University.

This past weekend, the Knights traveled to Cortland Country Club for the Cortland Martin/Wallace Invitational. Yet again, Draper finished best among the Knights, with a score of 90 on day one, and 91 on day two. In the division, Draper took ninth place. McCrory, fourteen strokes behind, finished with a combined score of 195 for the weekend, taking 14th. On the very first hole, McCrory scored a four on a par five. On the ninth hole, McCrory sank a birdie, finishing the front nine with a total of 47.

Only one stroke behind was Porter, scoring 104 on day one, and tying McCrory on day two. Healey finished just north of 200, with scores of 101 and 100 over the two-day period. Ippolito finished at 208, with 104 on both days. As a team, Geneseo took fifth place, only four shots behind St. Lawrence.

Coming off of two solid performances, Geneseo will head to the Northeast Women’s Golf Conference Championships in Wintonbury, Connecticut this weekend, Apr. 22-23. The event will conclude their season, which was filled with multiple wins and great golf by all.
