Women’s Field Hockey team during their high-scoring game on Saturday, Oct. 5th

Saturday, Oct. 5, the Geneseo Women’s Field Hockey team had an exciting win against Elmira College with a 9-0 win.

Within the first five seconds of the first period, fifth-year forward Katrina Clare got an assist from sophomore forward Ella Greico and slammed the ball into the back of the cage for a quick goal—which proved to be anything but the only goal this game. The Knights were itching to rack up the points, attempting eight shots on goal before senior midfielder Hailey Roethel successfully sent the team’s second over the goal line at seven and a half minutes. At 11 minutes and 40 seconds, freshman forward Aubree Wenner successfully got a shot on goal, which sent the crowd and her teammates into an uproar. Not long after, freshman midfield/defense Molly Videla caught a pass from Roethel and pushed it past the goalkeeper and into the back of the cage—making her first career goal.

With four points on the scoreboard, the Knights’ heads were on straight, and any nerves diminished when stepping into the second period. Two minutes into the second quarter, Clare scored the fifth point of the game with a strong and impressive hit that echoed off the backboard of the cage. Not even a minute later, senior midfielder Hanna Pochobradsky had an all-but surprising goal. With six more shots on goal before Geneseo’s seventh point, freshman forward Meredith Guertin, with her first career goal, had a powerful slap over the goal line and into the cage—wasting no time. Elmira’s defense was struggling as the Knights attacked them without hesitation or remorse, breaking their line and demonstrating nothing but excellent stick skills and communication efforts. This hard work paid off as the Knights went into halftime with a seven-point lead.

After halftime, the Knights began their third quarter with another goal eight minutes in. An assist by Roethel, who set freshman defender Sophia Lobo up with an impressive and successful shot on goal, brought the girls up to eight points in this shut-out matchup. This was Lobo’s first career goal as well, and it does not seem like it will be their last.

It wasn’t until nine minutes into the third quarter that Elmira successfully made it through the Knight’s defense to attempt a shot on goal. Geneseo’s defense was getting bored with the amount of upfield plays, excited for some action. Sadly, Senior goalkeeper Lilly Spitz did not get the chance to make a save as Elmira’s shot went wide. Before the third quarter ended, Pochobradsky assisted sophomore midfielder Kyra Giannelli and ended Geneseo’s goal-scoring for the game.

This nine-goal game is the highest-scoring game for the Knights since 2022 when Geneseo played Medaille and ended with an 11-0 victory. This team has had the most consecutive wins this season since 2019, when they ended their reign with 16 wins in a row.

If you see a field hockey player around campus, give them a high five for their victory and wish them good luck for their next competition on Saturday, Oct. 12, against Keuka College at Keuka Park, starting at 12:00 p.m. The Knights have seven more games before their Empire Eight Tournament, beginning on Monday, Nov. 4. Good job, girls, we’re proud of you!
