Senior Spotlight ft. Levi Wunder
It is unbelievable to see Geneseo’s ice hockey season slowly come to an end—it feels like just yesterday there was only one side of the bleachers was open for seating. Just as we watched the Ice Knights work their hardest in every game they played, we must thank the team’s seniors who carried the season. As much as I would love to interview every single senior on this team, I had to pick only one to interview.
Levi Wunder, a senior communications major from Escanaba, Michigan, is an astonishing hockey player—he has scored a total of nine points out of the 22 games he has played this season so far. Wunder started playing hockey at three years old. Throughout his 19 years playing hockey, Wunder always looked up to his friend's older brother as an inspiration. He went from playing high school hockey to going to one junior team in Canada, then another in the states. Wunder played D1 for two years at the University of Alabama-Huntsville before transferring to Geneseo in his junior year.
Wunder’s favorite hockey memory was when the Geneseo Ice Knights won the SUNYAC championship during the 2019-20 season—his first year playing here at SUNY Geneseo. After the boys won their championship, the world began to shut down due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Still, it was a great memory to hold onto before everything went on such a long break. Wunder cherishes the memories and the bonds that were formed by playing hockey here.
Wunder stated that his favorite team to play against was Oswego. Regardless of if it's a home or away game, the atmosphere is very lively and he enjoys the energy of playing against our rivals.
Rather unknown to the public, Wunder fractured one of his ribs during one of his away games versus Potsdam. His rib is still in the healing process—so, yes, he is currently playing with a fractured rib. What a guy!
After he graduates from Geneseo, Levi plans to continue playing hockey and eventually hopes to start coaching. He is looking forward to staying connected with the game. The advice he wants to leave his team with is to “be smart, have fun and look out for each other.”
On behalf of the Geneseo community, we thank Levi for his outstanding work on and off the ice, and wish him luck in his journey after college!
