Men’s ultimate frisbee finishes ‘21-22 season strong at Metro East Regionals
SUNY Geneseo Men’s Club Ultimate Frisbee (Snail) had a triumphant weekend at the Metro East Regionals this past weekend. Traveling halfway across the state to Fort Ann, NY, Snail recorded two wins against Union College (Electric City Plastic) and Colgate University (Jabberwock) to proudly send off the team’s 13 senior players. Geneseo Snail fought a hard five games over the weekend and netted a total of 52 points against other talented teams in the region, including the University of Rochester (Piggies), Ithaca (Nawshus), and The College of New Jersey (Revolution).
All 13 seniors on the team scored this weekend: Kevin Shepardson threw 12 points, senior team captain Alex O’Reilly threw seven points and caught one, Quentin Wall threw and caught four points, and team captain Oliver Stordahl threw 16 points and caught four.
“Snail had a good weekend,” Stordahl said. “We played well against some of the top teams in the region and got a chance to put all our practice to use. It was a great way to cap off the season and my senior year.” Stordahl has been captain for two years on Snail.
A significant addition to the day’s highlights was Snail’s face-off against Colgate’s Jabberwock. Snail and Jabberwock have a history together—the two teams play each other frequently at most tournaments in the area. When Snail played Colgate at Regionals this past fall, Snail won after a hard-fought 20-minute universe point. It was also a close game against Colgate at Sectionals for Snail about three weeks ago, where they bested Colgate 7-6 to go undefeated on the first day of the tournament and finished with a record of 4-0, eventually taking third place in the section.
Once again, Snail came out ready to play. The team quickly made six breaks and went into halftime with a score of 11-2, ultimately wrapping up the game with a winning final score of 15-6 and leaving the team’s morale running high.
“The energy on the sideline this weekend was unstoppable,” said senior Joe DiGilio, who accepted the team’s new position of “Spirit Captain” earlier this semester. “Throughout the Colgate game, hearing Snail pump everyone up on the sideline gave us momentum to play even better and go on a scoring streak.”
Some of the rookies (new members) on the team were able to get their first experience with the Regionals Tournament this past weekend as well. Sophomore rookie Zay Chaw had one point against TCNJ after faking his defender deep and cutting back under for an easy pass in the end zone.
“From a rookie standpoint, getting the chance to go to regionals was amazing. In going to this tournament, I feel closer to this team than I ever have. Getting to watch the seniors’ chemistry and leave it all out on the field was incredible too,” Chaw said.
Moving forward, Snail has some big shoes to fill. With 13 seniors leaving, Snail hopes to bring in a large rookie class this upcoming season.
