Women’s lacrosse extends conference record to 6-0 after win vs. New Paltz

Geneseo’s women’s lacrosse team continued their dominant season on Saturday, Apr. 15 as they traveled to New Paltz. The Knights came into the game on a two-game winning streak after taking down Oneonta and the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) at home over the past two weeks. They looked to continue their streak against a New Paltz team, who had on a four-game winning streak themselves as they sat with an 8-3 record on the season. Ultimately, the Knights defeated the Hawks 11-2 and improved their overall record to 10-3 while remaining undefeated in SUNYAC matchups; they currently sit at 6-0 against their conference rivals.

The offenses remained quiet for the first nine minutes of the game before junior midfielder Emily Salanger took a free position shot and scored her first goal of the matchup and twenty-third goal of the season to put the Knights ahead 1-0. Geneseo’s advantage remained at one as neither team could find the back of the net for the remainder of the first quarter.

Scoring in the second quarter began the same way, with Salanger taking control once again to extend the Knights’ lead to two off an assist from junior attacker Megan Cook. Less than two minutes later, the team struck once more with an assist from junior defender Tricia Curran leading to a goal from sophomore attacker Molly Brown to go up by three.

The Hawks pulled back within two with five minutes left in the half before Cook regained the Knights’ three-goal advantage with the help of an assist from junior attacker Reegan Vorgang to bring the game to halftime with Geneseo leading 4-1.

The third quarter was all Knights as they displayed some stellar defense while tallying four more goals to start the second half. Salanger added her third goal of the day off another assist from Cook within the first two minutes of the quarter before freshman midfielder Alaina Reina scored with the assist from Salanger to put Geneseo up 6-1. Less than one minute later, senior midfielder Maira Brennan joined the scoring by putting a ball in the back of the net with a free-position goal. Brown recorded her second goal of the day and thirty-third of the year with eight seconds left in the quarter to put the Knights up by seven.

The fourth quarter saw more of the same solid offense from Geneseo as Reina tallied once more, this time a free position goal, as the Knights were up a man. New Paltz recorded their second and final goal of the contest before Vorgang scored off of an assist from Curran with just over five minutes left to give the team an eight-goal advantage once again. Junior midfielder Caitlyn Korzeniewski assisted Salanger in adding her fourth score of the game and the final one of the matchup with three minutes left to give Geneseo the 11-2 victory. Graduate student goalie Maggie Rosaschi recorded six saves for the Knights while Curran tallied six caused turnovers in a well-rounded defensive game by the entire team.

The win marked the team’s seventeenth consecutive against New Paltz, as they have never lost against the Hawks. Geneseo will set their sights now on Cortland as they will travel to face the Red Dragons, who they are currently tied with atop the SUNYAC standings, in a matchup with massive playoff implications on Saturday, Apr. 22 at 1 p.m.
