The Finger Lakes are worth a visit
New York State is known for many attractions, and its natural resources are no exception. With plenty of water within the state, ranging from Niagara Falls to Lake George, to a series of bodies of water known as the Finger Lakes. While there are plenty of lakes, it seems none compare to the Finger Lakes.
The Finger Lakes consist of eleven different bodies of water, all of which are unique. Their sizes vary, the smallest being Candice and the largest being Seneca Lake. The unique layout of the Finger Lakes region is a result of glacial movement millions of years ago.
Over 5.5 million people visit the lakes each year, with good reason. One of the largest attractions in the area are the wineries—there are over 100 in the area, many of which are considered to be the best in the country.
As the Finger Lakes stretch across Western New York, there is no limit to where adventure can start. There are various boat tours offered around the lakes. These boat rides provide visitors with spectacular views of the water and the surrounding shores. These tours are well worth the cost, as they provide not only many picturesque scenes, but an informational tour experience that guides that educate visitors on the area.
With the closest lake to Geneseo being Conesus, which is a little less than six miles away, the lakes are quite accessible. This lake is the most western of the eleven, and on the smaller side. Along its shores are plenty of great local parks that are worth a day's visit.
Along with the local parks are the many State Parks that rest along the lakes. They range from the Taughannock Falls to Watkins Glen State Park. These parks funnel water into the Finger Lakes and themselves are based directly on bodies of water.
Along with the state parks that sit along these bodies of water, there is the Finger Lakes National Forest. This is the only National Forest within New York, and it has plenty of hiking trails. The land is preserved well and is a safe place for the wildlife that inhabit the 16,000 acres of the Finger Lakes natural forest.
There are many small towns worth visiting when in the area. These towns provide unique experiences, and plenty are filled with old architecture, as many date back to the 1800s. Going hand-and-hand with these small towns is their history, which is abundant.
While there are so many natural beauties within New York State, the Finger Lakes are one of the many features that make it so unique. The variety of landscape when visiting the area is plentiful, ranging from mountains to flat areas, and it seems there never is a dull moment. Between its natural charm, being a water source for over a million people, and providing plenty of recreation, it is safe to say the Finger Lakes are significant to this area.
