How to get involved at The Lamron and why you should

If you’re interested in joining The Lamron, it is never too late to get involved! As the semester comes to a close, our doors remain open for any students who are interested in getting more involved in SUNY Geneseo’s student-led newspaper! Come hang out with us sometime!

At the beginning of the semester, getting involved in clubs feels natural and appropriate, but as the semester marches on and the workload piles up, staying involved, or joining a club halfway through the semester can feel a little awkward. So, along with this reminder that it is never too late in the year to get involved in that club you’ve had your eye on, we thought we would let you know all the different ways SUNY Geneseo students and community members can get involved and support The Lamron.

One way to get involved is by joining The Lamron’s editorial board (e-board). Lucky for you, many positions on our e-board have opened up for Fall 2025 due to the surplus of graduating members currently sitting on the board. The available positions range in responsibilities, duties, and collaboration that create a space for, hopefully, everyone to enjoy. Those that are currently available are for Managing Editor, Copy Editor, both Co-News Editor positions, Opinion Editor, Arts and Entertainment Editor, Comic Editor, Business Manager, Public Relations (PR) Manager, and Photo Editor! If you are interested, please email lamron@geneseo.edu to learn more and to acquire an application, as these are interview positions due to the demands that come from these positions.

Another way to join is by working as an assistant to one of the e-board positions. Though it is more typical for section editors to have assistants, any sect of The Lamron’s positions are available for an assistant. Though varying, typically, assistants work to help the e-board member they work under have their realm of the paperwork more smoothly. This might mean editing a handful of articles each week, helping to make posts for Instagram (@thelamron), or taking photos around campus or at events.

Assistant opportunities are usually discussed between the e-board member who that individual is looking to work alongside and themself, and does not require any official interview process. It is a nice middle place for those interested in joining a higher position on the paper but want to see what the job entails before committing.

Then, are the unsung heroes of the paper, our general members. In the public, these individuals are typically seen through being Staff Writers in our paper (columnists, for first-time Lamron writers) or Staff Artists if they contribute comics. These individuals tend to be those who attend our weekly writer’s meetings and contribute to the paper on a semi-regular basis. They are an awesome way to get new faces and ideas into the office, as well as helping to lighten the article load for the paper’s e-board members.

Being a general member or a Staff Writer/Artist does not mean that members must come to every meeting or write something every week. Students are encouraged to contribute as often as fits into their schedule, and even if members cannot make the weekly or even semesterly meetings, that does not mean they cannot submit. Those interested can reach out through email (lamron@geneseo.edu) or join the paper’s GroupMe to arrange for their ideas to be budgeted into an upcoming paper. And when it comes to submitting, many digital resources exist to help walk writers through the paper’s guidelines, due dates, and helpful emails! Even just writing once or twice a semester is much appreciated by the staff, and hearing from someone new who is interested is always exciting for the paper’s staff.

Lastly, and maybe most simply, you can get involved by doing exactly what you are doing right now— reading the paper! As you can see from the details above, there are a lot of moving parts that work to make the paper what it is, and that is all in the hopes that someone will actually read the thing. Reading this newspaper is a great way to support us here, and we want to send a thank you to all our readers, those who engage with the physical print or the digital version.

Overall, I would encourage readers to get involved however they can. It helps you become better informed, and contributing in any form is a great way to further hone or acquire various skills, such as writing, editing, collaboration, advertising, and so many more! We like to think of ourselves here as fun, welcoming, and engaging, and we hope that you will join us as we continue to further develop and evolve as a paper— as we have done already for 103 years (and counting!).

Feel free to come visit us in The Lamron office, which is connected to the mailroom in the basement of the MacVittie College Union. We have our writer’s meeting every Thursday at 5:00 PM, but also check the calendar outside the door for e-board members’ office hours, or feel free to stop in if you see that people are inside— we are always happy to chat about The Lamron. Seriously, there is little else we love to do more than talk about this wonderful paper that so many people put so much careful attention and work into. We hope to see you at our writer’s meeting in the near future!
