Watching the Ice Knights is the best way to spend a Saturday night in Geneseo!

It’s finally that time of the fall semester where we get the pleasure of experiencing the Geneseo Ice Knights once again! A majority of their home games fall on Fridays and Saturdays, which makes it the ideal time to get some friends together and support your school’s sports team. The schedule is posted on the Geneseo’s Knights Hockey page at geneseoknights.com so make sure to check out when the home games are and plan accordingly.

After being at Geneseo for a while, you learn that there are very limited things you can do with your free time. Small towns have their pros and cons: some of you may have moved here from a big city, others might be from a town half this size. Either way, it can sometimes be a struggle for college students to find something easy, cheap, and closeby to participate in. We all know and love the little shops and restaurants on Main, but even those can get old after a while. Another thing that can hold us back from going out and enjoying fun things is the financial struggle. I, like many of you, need to be careful what I spend my money on since I can’t work as much during the craziness of the school year. This, unfortunately, might be the most limiting aspect of making plans as a college kid.

Lucky for us, the Ice Knights games are free for Geneseo students! Just make sure to bring your student ID for free admission, and put on all your favorite Geneseo merch and walk or carpool with some friends to the Wilson Arena. Not only are you showing up to support your college team, but it’s a great time to hang out with friends and even meet new people. Such a large part of being a college student is becoming part of the community; getting involved with clubs and activities is very important, and being there to cheer on the hockey team is a great way to be involved with the campus goings-on.

So, we’ve established that going to a hockey game is an easy, involved, and cost effective way to spend a weekend evening. Further, one of my personal favorite parts of attending the games is the incredible hype music we get to listen to between plays. Find the Geneseo Ice Knights Spotify playlist at this link. The music is arguably the most fun part of these hockey games, with songs by Queen, Bruno Mars, Britney Spears, Eminem, Rihanna, Jonas Brothers, Black Eyed Peas, and many more (the playlist includes a whopping 367 throwbacks); with all this variety—you are bound to hear some music that you love.

Given the limited number of free activities we have access to, consider attending an Ice Knights game the next time you need some weekend plans. Attending sporting events is such an important part of the college experience; we have the special opportunity to showcase school spirit and cheer on our team! The past few years have shown a downward trend in student attendance at college sporting events. Since COVID-19 impacted so many typical social aspects, it’s important to continue to put yourself out there and enjoy things you weren’t able to during the pandemic. With that said, we’ve got upcoming Ice Knights home games on Saturday, Oct. 28th, Friday, Nov. 3rd, and Saturday, Nov. 4th. I hope to see you there!
