SUNY Geneseo Clubs and Activities

SUNY Geneseo is home to 180 clubs and organizations with a wide variety of categories: academia, club sports, volunteer-based clubs, and many more.

There are many types of funding for clubs and organizations such as Student Association (SA) funding, non-SA funding, academic funding, etc.

Clubs play a role in fostering social connections, personal growth, and skill development. They provide a platform for like-minded individuals to come together, share common interests, and collaborate on projects or activities. Additionally, clubs often offer a sense of belonging and a supportive community, contributing to a well-rounded and fulfilling social experience.

Some public publications include The Lamron, Iris Magazine, and Recess Magazine. There are different aspects encompassed in each of these organizations like photography and genre-based writing. These groups offer great opportunities for resume building, close connections, and real life skills for writing—if that is the field that you are going into. Even if you are not going into the field but love writing, check out those clubs as they might be for you.

Lamron managing editor Ella Pearcy spoke on their experience with two of Geneseo’s written publications. “Joining clubs on campus has given me the chance to explore future career opportunities with organizations such as The Lamron and Iris which have allowed me to gain experience in leadership positions while also gaining publishing and editing skills.”

If games are your forte, at SUNY Geneseo there are many options including the Geneseo Area Gaming Group (GAGG), Chess club, Esports club, and more.

According to senior childhood special education major Allie Balawender, “GAGG has allowed me to connect with other students on campus that have similar interests to me and it is nice to meet up with a group of people you're familiar with once a week.”

Various club sports provide alternatives to collegiate level sports, which are a greater time commitment, allowing students to continue playing the sports they enjoy. Club sports offered at Geneseo include volleyball, karate, running, and both men and women’s sports. According to the athletics website, the intramurals and club sports are acknowledged by the athletic department.

If academic subjects are what interest you the most, there are academic based clubs you can join such as biology club, Elementary and Secondary Education Association (ESEA), history club, and so many more that can further your experience in your field as well as familiarize you with the professors and other students studying in your field.

Geneseo also has cultural organizations meant to connect students with similar backgrounds while also creating a space for students to learn about other cultures.  Some such examples of these organizations are Shakti, Latinx Association (LSA), and Pride Alliance.

Culture clubs play a role in celebrating and preserving diverse traditions, languages, and customs within the community. They provide a space for individuals to connect with their cultural roots, fostering a sense of pride and belonging. These clubs promote cross-cultural understanding and appreciation, contributing to a more inclusive society.
