King Charles diagnosed with cancer
On Feb. 5, 2024, a statement was released from Buckingham Palace revealing that King Charles III had been diagnosed with cancer.
The type of cancer has not been disclosed to the public but according to the released statement, “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.”
At 75 years of age, any mention of a diagnosis as serious as cancer causes great concern for many. Upon the news of the King’s diagnosis, several members of the royal family including Prince Harry and the Duke of Sussex have rallied around him, providing the King with the utmost support. Additionally, both politicians and citizens alike have sent well wishes to the King as he embarks on his cancer journey. The King has communicated his gratitude as he has received an overwhelming amount of support from the public. He went on to say, “As all those who have been affected by cancer will know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement.”
King Charles has chosen to disclose his new diagnosis to the public in order to ward off speculation as to why his number of public appearances has decreased. King Charles will reportedly continue his official State business but has been advised by medical professionals to limit public appearances. As of Feb. 5, the King has begun scheduled treatment for his cancer. It is unclear when the King will return to his public duties.
With King Charles stepping back from public appearances, it is expected that Queen Camilla and Prince William, the King’s son, will increase public appearances in his stead. According to the BBC, during an event at the Salisbury Cathedral last week, Queen Camilla commented that King Charles “is doing extremely well under the circumstances.”
London CNN recently released an image of King Charles amidst his first public outing since his diagnosis. King Charles and Queen Camilla were spotted walking to St. Mary Magdalene’s church in Norfolk this past Sunday. Both the King and Queen have now returned to London for Charles’ continued treatment.
Although King Charles has only reigned for 16 months, he has been involved in public works for decades. King Charles, formally known as the Prince of Wales, established over twenty charities prior to becoming king. Many politicians have noted that King Charles’ presence in the public will be missed.
King Charles has been dubbed the most famous cancer patient with several UK cancer charities having cited an increase in both donations and cancer screenings, particularly to those who focus on prostate cancer. While King Charles reportedly does not have prostate cancer, his diagnosis has encouraged many to go through the risk prevention and screening process.
While more information is still coming out about the unfortunate diagnosis of King Charles’ cancer, it is valuable that both he and his diagnosis are able to make a positive and educational impact on the community.
