FBI raid targets top fundraiser of NYC Mayor Eric Adams
Early in the morning on Nov. 2, 2023, federal agents executed a search warrant at the Brooklyn home of Brianna Suggs, a fundraiser and ally of New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Video from witnesses show FBI agents leaving the residence after hours of searching with at least one box in hand, which was later confirmed to include numerous electronics and hardware that contained sensitive campaign finance information. Allegations have swirled about the potential misuse of campaign funds through Suggs, including a scheme to funnel money from Turkey through a Brooklyn construction site.
The choice to raid, rather than subpoena, may indicate that federal authorities have substantial evidence regarding the alleged scheme currently under investigation. The events that took place were enough to bring Adams back home from Washington, D.C. Adams, who was attending meetings regarding migrant policy at the White House, came back to the Big Apple to “deal with the matter,” according to a spokesperson.
While Suggs found herself to be subject of controversy regarding Adams’ campaign finances, this is not the first time Adams has found himself to be at the center of legal trouble. This past summer, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg targeted a former NYPD colleague of Adams with illicit campaign contributions to the former Police captain’s mayoral campaign back in 2021. Retired Deputy Inspector Dwayne Montgomery was accused, alongside five others, of attempting to orchestrate a quid quo pro with the city once Adams was elected. But unlike the Bragg investigation, the FBI search hits close to home for the first term Adams. The raid that was executed on Thursday directly targets Adams and his campaign apparatuses.
The political turmoil that this raid has provoked has pundits already asking more questions regarding Adams’ unique pick for his main fundraising coordinator. The 23-year-old Suggs got her start in 2017 when she worked in the then Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams’ office for four years. Suggs was then entrusted with leading all fundraising operations for mayoral candidate Adams in 2021. This did not come without some backlash as appointing such a young political operative may bring. An anonymous donor told POLITICO in an interview that they were surprised with the pick, saying “She was very, very young. … What turned some heads is that she was running the whole operation of that campaign, the finance part of it, and she was so young and inexperienced.”
Despite the controversy, the rising young political operative seems to be going nowhere. Adams expressed his full faith in his confidant, telling a PIX11 reporter, “I have full confidence in her. She has done an amazing job, and if she will stay with the campaign team, I would love to have her continue to stay with the campaign team.” Adams' commitment to Suggs as his top fundraiser for his 2025 reelection campaign gives this current investigation by the FBI high stakes. Because of his continued pledged alliance with the embattled fundraiser, the results of the ongoing investigation may have major implications on the future of Adams as he seeks a second term in two years.
