Some Valentine’s Day events that took place on campus

Students gathered in the Union lobby and were able to bounce around between tables and experience all of the Valentine's Day fun that Geneseo had to offer.

While many students may have had a romantic evening with their significant other on Valentine’s Day, the campus was bustling with students from various clubs and organizations hosting events. Many Friday afternoons in the Macvittie Union are sparse with people, but this past Friday, Feb. 14— it was anything but!

One way organizations were hosting was through sitting at tables inside of the union and hosting numerous activities. The first of these organizations was the Young Children’s Council at SUNY Geneseo (YCC), which hosted a table inside the Union on Thursday and Friday. While in the Union, they sold Valentine’s Day cards that were individually handmade by their members and could be given out to the loved ones of those stopping by the table.

In a previous general meeting, members of the YCC made at least two cards each. One is to be sold in the union, and one is to be delivered to the Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester on Valentine’s Day. Their general meetings occur every other Wednesday at 7:00 pm in South 338.

On the same day, Geneseo Title IX Prevent hosted an event to help educate Geneseo students on the resources available to them. Their table was occupied by a wheel that students could spin to see if their prompt was going to be a date, hookup, or a friend hangout. The wheel’s purpose was to show how all of the different prompts can mean different things to different people.

The scenarios show why it is very important to be clear and direct when it comes to communication and showcase that it is okay to ask people directly about their intentions. Alongside this activity, they also had a station where people could write a love letter to themselves.

Recognizing self-love on Valentine’s Day is something that is often overlooked, but it is an important part of the day. Platonic and romantic love is something to be celebrated, but not everyone is in a situation where they can, or want to, celebrate that type of love. But everyone can celebrate the love they have for themselves or the love they are trying to grow for themselves.

Alongside these self-love letters, they also had Myko the therapy dog present to spread some “puppy love” to students passing through. Students could also take photos with Myko and make valentines out of those as well!

Another group that was present on Valentine’s Day was Geneseo Voices for Planned Parenthood (VOX). For those unfamiliar with the group, they are a student advocacy club on campus that discusses and hosts events to educate students about reproductive justice, safe sex, and anything else relevant to sexual health.

They had two Valentine-themed events this year, one taking place on Wednesday, Feb. 5, in Bailey 202. During this event, members made cards for the Willow Center in Rochester, a local women’s shelter.

Their second event took place on Valentine’s Day at 6:00 pm, also in Bailey 202. During this event, they discussed the characteristics of a healthy relationship and did some self-care activities. They also had free candy for attendees to truly attain the Valentine’s Day spirit!

If you are a member of a club with an upcoming event and would like to see it featured in The Lamron, email lamron.knightslife@gmail.com with the event information, and a member may be able to cover it!
