Invasion of Privacy: Copy Editor Dylan Dariano

Since 2022, The Lamron has been graced with Dylan Dariano’s presence; he is a senior communication major who currently serves as the copy editor. He has held several different positions within the organization and proved to be the utility man that we needed. As graduation approaches, his time with The Lamron is coming to a close, and therefore, we decided it was necessary to share his story. 

Dariano began where everyone does, as a columnist and eventual staff writer. After only a few weeks he was promoted to sports copy editor, a title he would only hold for a short time. Roughly one week later, he became the assistant sports editor and began assuming the responsibilities of a seasoned writer and editor. As time went on, his hard work and dedication landed him the title of sports editor, a role he would share with current editor, Nathan Hubbard. Together, they revamped the section before Dariano quickly moved up in the ranks. In February 2024, he became the copy editor of The Lamron, taking on even more responsibilities and further demonstrating his unwavering dedication to our paper.

Dariano’s love for media extends far beyond The Lamron, though, and also into radio. In March 2023, he created a sports talk show, Chalk Talk, on 89.3-FM WGSU. Chalk Talk made its radio debut that April and quickly evolved into much more. While serving as both a host and the sports director of the station, Dariano was also able to create a notable social media presence for the show.

Over the past two years, Dariano has also worked in the Office of Athletic Communications and Media Relations at SUNY Geneseo, refining his skills in communication from graphic design and videography to live sports commentary and photography. For the duration of the 2023-2024 season, he was notably the “Voice of the Ice Knights” as he commentated on nearly every home game for Geneseo’s renowned ice hockey team. 

During his time working with the school's athletics department, Dariano worked closely with the director of athletic communications, Riley Damerell. When asked about his time working with the department, he noted how much he learned from working with Damerell; “I've definitely learned a lot from Riley… I've learned a lot to the point where I'm interviewing for similar positions to his because I enjoyed it so much.”

Dariano’s hard work over the course of the last four years has landed him numerous opportunities, including an internship working with Mad Dog Sports Radio on SiriusXM. During this time, Dariano was able to work alongside high-profile personalities in the sports media world and even sit in on an interview with one of his sports idols, Curtis Granderson. Most notably, his work was featured on The Pat McAfee Show on ESPN. Wrapping up his time at Sirius XM, Dariano also conducted an interview with Buffalo Bills legend Steve Tasker. When asked about his time with the company, he stated “Being on ESPN was pretty cool and being on the same zoom as Curtis Granderson…beautiful.”

Dariano didn’t always know that athletic communications was the path he wanted to take, he came to SUNY Geneseo as a history education major; this was largely influenced by the fact that his favorite teachers through middle and high school all taught history. During his third semester at Geneseo, however, he made the decision to switch his major to communication; “As soon as I switched, the motivation was there. I realized that's what I want to do. There's never been a point where I thought that wasn't the right decision.” 

When asked about his time as a communication major, Dariano noted the importance of communication faculty members Dr. Lee Pierce and Dr. Andrew Herman to his success; “Since switching to communication, I haven’t gone a semester without taking a class with Lee, and Dr. Herman has helped me in and out of the classroom more than anyone else here.”

Dariano comes from the capital region of New York, approximately four hours away from Geneseo. He came to college in the fall of 2020, knowing no one in the area except his girlfriend Camryn. Despite the COVID restrictions and other obstacles in finding like-minded people on campus, Dariano stated “I definitely found that sense of community, and it definitely came when I switched to communication and joined The Lamron.”

Following graduation, Dariano plans to stay in New York for the next few years and to find a job within the athletic communication sphere. He is looking at radio and television opportunities in local media, while also interviewing for positions within athletic communications offices in other universities. 

In his perfect world, Dylan would like to be the voice of the New York Yankees, his favorite team. If that doesn’t work out, he is adamant that he would like to live in the dry scorching land of Arizona, and he will “fight for the rest of [his] life” to do so.
