General education classes to take in Spring 2025

Registration is a term that strikes fear into the heart of many college students— especially when you are unsure of what classes you should even take. While everyone is on a different path, there are a few general education classes that you may be overlooking or too stressed to find. Here are a few 100-level courses being offered for the Spring 2025 semester that might be the right fit for you!

If you have yet to complete your language requirement at Geneseo, advisors recommend completing it as soon as possible! Geneseo requires students to take two sections of a language other than English if they have not already fulfilled the requirement in high school or outside of Geneseo. Both elementary Spanish and French are being offered at Geneseo next semester. Even if you are a freshman or sophomore, beginning to fill the language requirement early will prevent any disasters in your senior year if you cannot fit a language class into your schedule.

Many students take Introductory Psychology 101 to fulfill general education requirements and for good reasons. The course has 135 seats available and is only 50 minutes long. Topics include the biological basis of behavior, perception, human development, emotion, psychological disorders, and more. As someone who has taken the class before, I personally highly recommend it.

For those who took Psychology 101 and found it intriguing, you may be interested in looking into Geneseo’s sociology offerings. Next semester, Introduction to Sociology 100 is being offered, and over 40 seats are available to students. This course is also being offered during multiple different time slots. It has one option of 50-minute classes throughout the week or one longer class that takes place once a week. It will cover topics such as the nature of society, social organizations, and major social institutions.

If you are looking for a general education class that is a little different than the rest, Introduction to Dance 100 might be perfect for you. The class covers various dances, including ballet, modern, jazz, tap, ethnic, and folk. Readings, attendance, and attending on-campus performances and/or films are required for the course. Though it is a requirement, attending these on-campus performances will allow you to support fellow Geneseo students, get more involved, and try something new!

For those less interested in performing art and are interested in studying it instead, an art history class is calling your name! Geneseo is currently offering Gothic Art History 171 next semester with a professor recently featured in The Lamron, Hilary Toothe. The class will study paintings, sculptures, and architecture through the gothic periods of time.

While fulfilling these general education requirements may seem daunting, taking advantage of it is a privileged time. After graduation, many students will not have opportunities to study diverse topics alongside fellow students and professors who are extremely educated in their respective fields. Take advantage of this time and try various classes— you never know what you will find interesting until you try.

Remember that every Geneseo student has different interests and requirements for their major. What works for one student may not work for another. If you are very concerned about your next semester schedule or have questions before your registration time slot, reach out to your advisor. If you have additional questions, the Academic Planning and Advising Office (DAPA) is available to help. You can make an appointment with them using the navigate system linked on the Geneseo website under “Academic Advising.”
