Frugal Foodie: The best grilled cheese
If you’re anything like me, the majority of your retail dollars go toward buying the grilled cheese sandwich from Starbucks an embarrassing number of times a week. Though the Beecher’s Grilled Cheese is spectacular, here is a recipe for a grilled cheese that you can not only make at home, but that rivals the one at Starbucks, and is even customizable to your wants and needs. Your retail dollars will thank me.
Ingredients:
- 2 slices of cheese (I personally like pepper jack, but you can choose any cheese to your liking)
- Two slices of bread (again, dealer’s choice—I usually go for sourdough)
- Choice of fat (mayonnaise, butter or olive, chili or coconut oil)
Great combos:
- Pepper jack and sourdough, brushed with chili oil
- American and white bread, brushed with butter
- Swiss and rye, brushed with mayo
- Cheddar and brioche, brushed with butter
Directions:
Step 1: Sandwich two slices of cheese between two slices of bread.
Step 2: Begin warming up a medium size skillet over medium-low heat.
Step 3: Spread or brush outside of the sandwich with your choice of fat.
Step 4: Cook one side for 3 to 4 minutes or until lightly browned. Flip the sandwich and repeat on the other side.
Step 5: Remove sandwich from heat and cut in half diagonally.
Step 6: Enjoy!
