The Marías: A dreamy sensation

The Marías is an indie pop band gaining extreme traction on Spotify and TikTok with their single, “No One Noticed.”

In early 2025, The Marías reached new heights of success with the virality of their single, “No One Noticed.” Accumulating over 315 million streams on Spotify, this song has taken over TikTok, with thousands of users posting videos with the audio of the song’s pre-chorus.

Formed in 2016, this indie pop band embodies a soft and calming sound akin to artists like Clairo and Faye Webster. Lead singer María Zardoya incorporates English and Spanish in her lyrics, giving The Marías a unique bilingual appeal. The band has also collaborated with fellow Latina artists, including Selena Gomez, on the song "Ojos Tristes."

In classic Fleetwood Mac fashion, The Marías are no strangers to interband relationships. The band was formed by María Zardoya and her partner, Josh Conway, the current drummer. Their romance lasted until 2022, when the two decided to collaborate musically despite their breakup. Their dedication to music resulted in the release of their newest album, Submarine (2024), which reflects their post-breakup experiences— and, truthfully, is perfect in every way.

There is not one skip on this album, so if you desperately need new songs, this album offers you a bank of material to choose from. This entire album feels like a melancholic dream, and songs like “Paranoia,” “Run Your Mouth,” and “Love You Anyway,” are choices I recommend for those in the mood to completely float away.

“Sienna,” another track from Submarine (2024), is a personal favorite that I could listen to on repeat. It is theorized that its name references Zardoya and Conway’s hypothetical child, Sienna. While the song reminisces on the memories the two of them shared, its main focus is how the child they’ve been dreaming of, who would embody both of their characteristics, will no longer exist.

While I have never dreamt of having a child, I can see how many in thriving relationships can view one as a symbol of their combined love. It is beautiful to think about, but this same idea means that the child will not exist if their love doesn’t, and the family these ex-lovers have envisioned for themselves will forever stay theoretical.

I always prefer melody to meaning; a song needs to be musically pleasing enough for me to dig deeper and strain the emotions and messaging. Because of this, I am grateful The Marías has such a hypnotizing sound— it inclined me to learn more and emotionally connect to this song on another level.

Many of the songs by The Marías have a somber tone, but unlike other artists, their emotional tracks do not weigh you down. I love sad songs with an upbeat facade; to me, it allows for darker storytelling without taking a toll on your current mood. Zardoya’s docile and airy voice makes for an incredibly peaceful listen, one that I recommend hearing during morning walks to class.

Dreamy indie-pop is an underrated genre for the springtime season. If you love listening to Clairo or Men I Trust for a relaxed vibe on a sunny day, The Marías is the perfect band to spice up your playlist. Give all of Submarine (2024) a listen— it is absolutely worth your time.
