My Super Bowl Highlights

With 123.4 billion watchers, this past Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 11, was the most-watched television event of the year! Beloved by many wing-eating, beer-drinking football fans, the 2024 Super Bowl hosted an intense game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. My apathy towards the Chiefs’ victory and the game itself couldn’t be stronger as I lay on the couch, using that night as an excuse to splurge on a Wegmans sub. In marketing major, non-sports fan fashion, I only cared for two things: the commercials and the halftime show.

With that being said, I intend to go over my top four highlight moments from the Super Bowl. Heed the warning that there will be no mention of the gameplay itself. That can be found in the Sports Section of The Lamron.

1. Usher’s Halftime Show

It would’ve been awesome…20 years ago. In all seriousness, I thought Usher’s performance was good for what it was (especially when he brought out the skates), but I found his song choices to be irrelevant. I haven’t seen much commentary online about it, and I think I can attribute this to its lack of memorability.

What was memorable was Alicia Keys' voice crack. It was so memorable that fans noticed it was “fixed” in the official NFL halftime performance video. Despite her error, something inevitable during a live performance, I thought she sounded amazing.

Lastly, Usher’s extreme closeness with Alicia Keys prompted me to look up if they were both married… That’s all I have to say about that.

2. Travis Kelce Screaming

I know two things about Travis Kelce: He’s a football player and he’s dating Taylor Swift. Seeing him shove, scream, and intimidate his coach because he was upset with a decision took me aback. Not to mention, it made me feel a bit uneasy. To feel comfortable being this visually angry in the public eye is something I, and a lot of other people, will never understand.

On a lighter note, the memes this altercation produced have been keeping me entertained.

3. Celebrities In the Audience

I apprehensively confess that I am no Swiftie. Despite that, the shots of Taylor Swift chugging beer on the big screen and swaying with Lana Del Rey, Blake Lively, and Ice Spice were thoroughly entertaining.

Seeing Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Gwen Stefani, and even Lady Gaga in the audience was a nice surprise as well. However, it had me wishing that they were the ones on stage instead of Usher.

4. CeraVe Ad

Although some were questionable, most of the Super Bowl commercials were satisfactory. Every ad had countless celebrity appearances, but my favorite was Micheal Cera in the CeraVe commercial. The similarities between his name and the famous skincare line were such an awkward but hilarious connection, a reason that made his appearance all the better; it was nice to giggle during an incredibly slow part of the game. I’m not a fan of CeraVe, but I thoroughly applaud whoever brainstormed this concept.

Despite my neutrality towards football, the Super Bowl is a cultural phenomenon I feel the need to be a part of every year without fail. While there have been better commercials and performances, this year still had its highlights. I only have one regret for that Sunday night: How did I not know Nickelodeon had its own broadcast? I know where I’ll be watching it next year, and the entire Arts & Entertainment section thinks you should, too!
