It’s What’s Inside (2024): A scary good time

Netflix's new original sci-fi horror film has received massive praise from viewers online and is deemed the perfect movie for the spooky season.

With October ending, the time when it is socially acceptable to sit around with friends and watch horror is dwindling. If you are looking for something to do as you await the notorious “Halloweekend,” I recommend a good movie with friends. As a genre, horror is incredibly diverse, meaning there is a movie for everyone—even those who prefer to sleep with the lights on. And I get it: to have a group of friends with different preferences all agree on one movie is a challenge scarier than the fall season, but when I tell you that Netflix’s new film, It’s What’s Inside (2024), is for everyone, I truly mean it.

Since this movie is a mix of horror and sci-fi, the concept is intriguing, and the scares are minimal. In the film, an old group of friends reunite for a pre-wedding party. All is well until a surprise guest arrives with a mysterious item: a suitcase that can tear the friend group apart. The movie shows how fast a party game can morph into a psychological nightmare when a friend group carries excessive inner turmoil. Due to my personal feelings that this movie is best to go in blind, I will not elaborate on what is in the suitcase and why it is such a compelling story direction (sorry, you will just have to trust me—or better yet—watch it yourself).

It’s What’s Inside (2024) is a mind twist that will require you to pay attention—but do not worry—that task will not be difficult. I guarantee you will be engrossed the entire time, whether by the hilarious characters, the crazy plot twists, or the visually appealing cinematography; since the plot is super unique, the camera has to be as well. Grab a pen and paper before diving in; this movie will have you pausing, keeping track of every interaction, and questioning your own sanity. As someone who truly enjoys turning their brain off when watching television, I believe this movie is an anomaly that will make you want to think.

My favorite thing about this film is that it is a lot of fun! Like with the horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022), this film hilariously portrays a new generation of young adults in messed up scenarios. Both movies are what I like to coin as “party horror,” movies that are disturbing enough for thrills but not too much that it kills the mood of the function and leaves you staring at a wall (I am looking at you, Talk to Me (2022)). I have not had this much fun with a movie, let alone a horror movie, in a long time; It’s What’s Inside (2024) may be my favorite Netflix original to date. It is certainly a gem I will love more on a rewatch when I inevitably force all my friends to partake in this cool, mind-bending experience.

The ending of It’s What’s Inside (2024) is so satisfying that I would feel more blessed if no sequel announcement was on the horizon. Despite that, I am still hopeful we can see more of the characters I came to root for and how this plot can be further developed; I think this movie could have worked flawlessly as a limited series as well. Do not let my talk of paying attention shy you away from this movie—it is such a good time! Do yourself a favor and check it out with some friends on Netflix; it will be the perfect way to end your October.
