Best dressed: MET Gala 2022
Best Dressed:
Blake Lively: MET Gala 2022 host and actress Blake Lively wore a reversible Versace gown that was certainly the crown jewel of this year’s red carpet. Lively walked onto the carpet with husband Ryan Reynolds in a stunning rose-gold number featuring detail that honors New York City’s architecture—a dress that would have made my Best Dressed list on its own. As she ascended the stairs to the MET, Lively released her copper-colored skirt bow to reveal a completely new—a stunningly gorgeous aqua blue train, dappled with the copper and detailed with glittery mythical creatures. This was Lively’s first time at the Met since she wore Versace’s memorable burgundy gown for the Heavenly Bodies theme in 2018, and she certainly lived up to the echo of that hype.
Lizzo: Lizzo stepped onto the red carpet this year in a dramatic and gilded hand-embroidered cloak that trailed the carpet elegantly. Underneath the cloak, she wore a form-hugging gown, accentuating her curves, and several-inch black nails complementing the look, flecked in gold. The singer and musician arrived carrying a gold flute, and played it for the press, only adding to the regality of her ensemble. Lizzo’s look was designed and created by Thom Browne.
Gigi Hadid: This year’s supermodel Gigi Hadid stirred things up with her red Versace catsuit and enormous matching puffer coat. While some Twitter users have created memes from this look, comparing it to Lizzie McGuire, it can’t be denied that Hadid’s look stood out and embodied the over-the-top nature of the MET Gala.
Quannah Chasinghorse: Indigenous model and activist Quannah Chasinghorse (member of the Hän Gwich'in and Oglala Lakota tribes) wore a Prabul Gurung turquoise tulle gown that floated across the red carpet. Her styling included braided hair accentuated with feathers and traditional indigenous beaded jewelry designed by indigenous artist and activist Lenise Omeasoo. Chasinghorse’s entire ensemble was inspired by love and support for and from her native community, and perfectly interpreted the theme of the American Anthology of Fashion for this year’s ball.
Worst Dressed:
Kylie Jenner: While fashion is highly subjective, and my preference is to dwell solely on the incredible works of art created by designers and presented on the red carpet, sometimes a look so horrendous comes along that it must be discussed. This year, Kylie Jenner appeared in a poofy, sheer-sleeved off-white wedding gown designed by Virgil Abloh. As if this wasn’t atrocious enough on its own, Jenner topped it off with a bird-cage veil secured with a floral adorned backward baseball cap. The wedding dress was distasteful already, but paired with the accessories she chose, the ensemble veered into the lane of obnoxious. Sorry, Kylie—you’re not making it on my list this year.
Honorable Mentions:
Kim Kardashian: Of course, any article about this year’s MET Gala looks is not complete without discussion of Kim Kardashian’s Monroe moment. For weeks, it has been anticipated that Kardashian would wear Marilyn Monroe’s famous dress from her “Happy Birthday Mr. President” performance at Madison Square Garden shortly before her death in 1962. Designed by Jean Louis, and hand-sewn with over 6,000 crystals, this sheer dress was created with a fabric made to match Monroe’s exact skin tone and holds the world record for the dress auctioned off at the highest ever price of 4.1 million dollars. Kim claims she had to lose 16 pounds in three weeks to fit into it, but managed to, and proceeded to stun the red-carpet viewers in the exquisitely iconic gown. Shortly after appearing on the red carpet in the original gown, Kardashian changed into a replica of the gown fit to her measurements as to not expose the legendary dress to the elements any further.
