Netflix’s Wednesday review

The new comedy horror show Wednesday debuted on Nov. 23, 2022. It rose to Netflix’s top ten list and is now number one on the United States charts. The story follows the famous character of Wednesday Addams, a nightmarish girl whose family decides to send her to Nevermore Academy for teens with strange powers, who finds herself in a mysterious situation involving her parents and an unsolved murder from twenty-five years prior. The show constantly unfolds new plot-twists in every episode, making the binge-watching so worthwhile. So far, the show has received excellent reviews, with a score of eight point five out of ten on IMDB and a sixty-nine percent rotten tomatoes rating. I started watching it a couple of days after it came out and finished it two days later.

Freshman early childhood education major Emma Griffin gave insight into what she thinks about the show. When asked about her favorite character, she said, “Wednesday, because she’s just everything. But like for the side characters, I really like the principal because she gives the most backhanded compliments.”

When asked to rate the show out of ten, Griffin replied comedically: “Eleven. It was so good I watched it all in one night. I was up until two in the morning because I could not put it down. I liked watching it while doing schoolwork and eating. I just could not stop the show. It felt illegal to stop it.”

Griffin also thinks that the show should have a second season: “I was hoping for a second season the minute I finished it. I literally texted people just to ask when the second season is coming out. I even looked it up because I just wanted the second season to be there already.”

The lead actress of Wednesday, Jenna Ortega, who has already received acclaim for her roles in another Netflix original You and the more recent slasher film X, has garnered a lot of internet attention for her sardonic performance as Wednesday. Griffin had equally positive feelings for the actress: “I love her, and I think that she plays the role of Wednesday so well because even if she’s not playing Wednesday, she still acts like she’s playing Wednesday. Like it’s just her personality. There could not be a better person to play Wednesday Addams than Jenna Ortega herself.”

I’m going to have to go ahead and agree with everything Griffin said; the show is undoubtedly a must-watch for those who haven’t yet seen it, but I have one more talked-about scene to mention—the cello scene. It is said that Ortega practiced for hours on end just to play the cello piece correctly. The song played is “Winter (from The Four Seasons)” by Antonio Vivaldi. The first note played in the song reminds me precisely of Wednesday, and the scene perfectly encapsulates a buildup of anger. The music is mysterious and spooky, which is perfect for Ortega’s role.

Overall, I would definitely go check this show out if you haven’t already! It is perfect for binge-watching with friends and family, and you won’t want to miss out on this fantastic new addition to Netflix’s catalog!
