An essential fall show: Gilmore Girls (2000-2007)

A popular tradition for many is to watch TV shows and movies that correlate with a specific holiday or season. While this concept mostly applies to Christmas—people love to sit down and watch Elf (2003) around December—I believe it should be a year-round phenomenon. Gilmore Girls (2000-2007) is the perfect example of a television show that radiates autumnal energy even though the show depicts all seasons of the year. Since the drama takes place in a small town, its setting is always beautiful and inviting to those watching.

To elaborate on the setting, the show mainly occurs in a fake small town in Connecticut called Stars Hollow. What makes this place comforting and inviting is the close-knit nature of the town; although new characters are introduced throughout the seasons, many of the show’s core players remain the same. The same silly characters appear in every episode, making the watcher feel like this town is their own.

The fall season nearly takes up the entirety of the show, even with the celebration of Christmas and the occasional summer episode. The show is known to skip periods such as summer or late spring and pick up chronologically in the fall, and the reason for this is up to speculation; the emphasis on fall could be because one of the main characters is a high school student who does not attend school in the summer, or maybe it is to simply preserve the festive fall feeling of the episodes.

Due to the show airing in 2000 and running until 2007, college students and those in Gen-Z can feel nostalgia just by watching it. For many, the early 2000s was a time filled with less stress, no responsibilities, and an abundance of happiness—all things that can be reminisced through the vibes and setting of Gilmore Girls (2000-2007). Like fall, this show has the magical ability to warm you with nostalgia.

Another thing that makes this the perfect fall show is the characters’ actions. Two main characters, mother and daughter duo Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, always get coffee and breakfast from a local small diner owned by one of their good friends. Getting a hot coffee and hanging out in a coffee shop, alongside pumpkin picking, is a staple in the fall season. This daily task from the characters gives that welcoming atmosphere to those watching and allows them to relate to the two main characters.

Alongside being a perfect fall watch, Gilmore Girls (2000-2007) is a classic television show everyone should watch. Each character has its unique characteristics, each very different from the next. Yet, they all coexist perfectly together and create a plot full of laughter and—occasionally—moments of sadness. One of the main characters, Rory, is a graduating high school student who later attends college. During this time, she faces many challenges during this transition and reaches many different low points. What makes this a great watch, specifically for college students, is how Rory is able to overcome her challenges by receiving advice from those around her who care.

After a long day of classes and various other activities, watching an episode or two of a television show is a great way to unwind and relax. Whether with friends, family or by yourself, putting an episode of Gilmore Girls (2000-2007) is the perfect idea for this fall season. Have a cup of hot chocolate, light a fall-scented candle, and relax while watching the best autumn show on the market.
