Five must-have songs for your summer playlist

The summer season may seem gated behind the iron wall of piling schoolwork and rainy days, but it’s not out of reach. Fear not; the time for tanning, swimming, Mojitos, cold watermelon, and warm nights linger just around the corner.

While my playlists fill with melancholy melodies in the colder months, summer calls for light, airy, and upbeat rhythms. Imagine a car packed with friends, a slight breeze sculpting your hair, and a positive vibe so strong that it spills out the open window. The song that plays through the car’s speakers makes the moment one to remember. I ask the question: What songs are best for blasting out the windows of a car or resting on a floatable tanning bed?

I took the liberty of sharing five songs that belong in everyone’s summer playlist. If you find one you haven’t heard of, give it a listen! These five were crafted by the higher powers to boost your serotonin. Sorry Lana, there’s no “Summertime Sadness” here.

One: “The Adults Are Talking” by The Strokes

“The Adults are Talking,” a song by The Strokes, is featured on their sixth album, The New Abnormal. Although other songs from The Strokes, such as “Last Nite” and “Someday,” are catchy serotonin boosters, “The Adults Are Talking” is by far my favorite. This song teeters between freshness and familiarity, filled with deep nostalgia and excitement. Hearing the chorus for the first time, you’d think you’ve known this song your whole life, like a lullaby etched into your brain since childhood. Even if you don’t know the words, you’ll soon find yourself singing along!

Two: “Talk Too Much” by COIN

“Talk Too Much” by COIN, is featured on their second studio album, How Will You Know If You Never Try. I firmly believe that any song from this album is perfectly composed for summer, but “Talk Too Much” has every positive attribute–a catchy chorus, a lively guitar interlude, and fun lyrics to scream along to. Carefree and positive vibes practically radiate off the chorus. It is impossible to frown when listening to this earworm. Check it out, especially if you’re a fan of indie rock.

Three: “1983” by Neon Trees

“1983” by Neon Trees was released on their second album, Habits. I don’t dictate the rules of the summer, but if I did, it’d be illegal not to have Neon Trees on a playlist. Their songs are catered to all, regardless of gender, age, and musical taste. “1983” has incredible vocals, beats, and a melody that will wear out your voice from oversinging. It’s simple, it’s upbeat, and it never gets old. Are you having a pool party? Play “1983.” I guarantee that your entire backyard will become a flash mob.

Four: “Around the Sun” by Poolside & Amo Amo

Poolside’s “Around The Sun,” featuring Amo Amo, is from their 2020 studio album, Low Season. Are you in the mood to relax by the pool? Do you want to feel like you’re floating on a cloud?  The flowy rhythm in “Around the Sun” gives the illusion that the song is reaching out to massage your sore muscles from winter. The meaningless lyrics encapsulate the worry-free aura that beams from the melody. I’ve never been able to buy a hot tub, but this song gives the same feeling of shivering skin touching hot water—your tension will disappear with the click of the play button.

Five: “Still Sleepless” by D.O.D & Carla Monroe

“Still Sleepless” is a 2021 single by D.O.D featuring Carla Monroe. This song is perfect for late evenings on the dance floor, festivals, or nighttime drives around town. Whether you are in the car, beautifying for a night out, or hanging in your backyard, this electrifying beat will make you want to mosh no matter where you are! If you’re looking for an EDM (electronic dance music) song that’ll excite anyone, “Still Sleepless” should be your first choice.

Honorable Mentions: “Santeria” by Sublime, “Are we alone?” by COIN, “Kids” by MGMT, “Raspberry” by GROUPLOVE, and “Brazil” by Dylan Mckenna
